FYI Only, if you're in the Syd AU area... AVATAR the new you @ The Australian Centre for Photography A few pics from the show are posted here: http://sl2rllove.blogspot.com/Friday 5 September to Saturday 4 October 2008 Tue - Fri: 12.00 - 7.00pm, Sat & Sun 10.00am - 6.00pm Curated by Malcolm Smith The original Avatars came from Indian mythology; they were the bodies the Gods used when they chose to walk upon the earth. Today the term Avatar is more commonly associated with the graphical action figures we use when we play games in online worlds. Like virtual alter-egos, our avatars can be whoever we want them to be; musclebound commandos, lithe blood elves, penguins or Pokemon. If you are on Facebook, Myspace, a dating site or if you can Google yourself, you have a virtual identity. As more and more of our time is spent online; socialising, conducting business, broadcasting our opinions or looking for love; the way we are perceived there is becoming as important as in real life. Avatars are more than a puppet or a plaything; they are the new you. The artists in this exhibition are inspired by Popular Culture rather than High Art, through games such as World of Warcraft or Half Life, virtual environments such as Second Life or the Sims, or content sharing sites such as Flickr, and Youtube. They question conventional attitudes towards gender, spirituality, violence, technology, sexuality and identity, examining how these issues have been transformed by online technologies.

Although this is something I can't get to (barring that they really do make that weird plane that was supposed to take 45 minutes London to Sydney) this is interesting. Thanks for posting!

From: Cherry Czervik Although this is something I can't get to (barring that they really do make that weird plane that was supposed to take 45 minutes London to Sydney) this is interesting. Thanks for posting! NP Cherry... I also just posted these two shows to the SLED list...I have absolutely no affiliation with these folks but I also HIGHLY suggest a stop by here (since you can't make it to the RL show, a consolation prize, perhaps??): From: someone For those of you who love the shop 'Botanicals at Straylight', the designer who runs that shop has an even more spectacular forest build that is currently populated with works by an amazing, award-winning artist. *A teaser photo--click to enlarge--is available here: http://sl2rllove.blogspot.com/ (scroll down a tic to see it) "Bettina Tizzy has kindly offered to host several sculptures by Glyph Graves at her home sim ChaKryn Forest (created by Andrek Lowell). They have been scatter around this beautiful sim ... above and below water in the valleys and in the hills. You should start here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Chakryn/138/198/22" -- Second Life 2 Real Life Love: http://sl2rllove.blogspot.com/*Created by a couple who met on Second Life, then in Real Life (one going from the USA to AU), immediately got pregnant with a daughter due in October, and are now getting married. This blog, written by several authors from a variety of backgrounds, provides links to numerous resources (including studies) on taking SL love to RL, as well as gives updates on SL2RLlove stories like ours.* ~Randoym Randt & Matchsticks McMahon
