how far are we from having a system for the client similar to Firefox's extensions? (ability of adding additional functionality as well modifying existing ones without having to get a whole new binary for the client and stuff like that)

/me *spanks* Tigro for tempting LL with yet another browser/viewer analogy.
The politically correct answer to this is: you got the source, go for it.
There has been talk of client-side scripting. One consideration about that, for "futurist" purposes, is that the faction interested in this is not completely disjoint from the faction that thinks the current UI code is so whacked that "refactoring" is a euphemism for what's needed before new features (like the NAV project) get hung off the current framework.
And, considering the collective whining, whimpering, and death-threats it took to get even *skinning* on the roadmap ahead of the 1.20 release going standard, I wouldn't expect an aggressive schedule for any client-side extensibility.
