Line Break In Group Title

I saw someone with a very interesting group tag, and the end result was that they appeared to have the group title "-", and then their 'name' was "<removed first name> <3". My radar, however, told me that this was a funky group title.

My question: How was this done, and how can I do this myself?

You can do it by manipulating the data on protocol level; it cannot be done from within the viewer.
Strangely, I am told that different sims react differently to the improperly formatted group title, so it's not a reliable thing, and I expect it to be patched at some point.
