Since downloading release 1.19.1.4 I have been experiencing several problems. Resolution of avatars beyond the very immediate vicinity is very "grainy" (pixelated?). What is most disturbing, to me, is a wierdness with sound. I go to a LOT of live music shows, and now the sound is muted. Another wierdness, when I'm at a dance club with a live DJ, the music seems fine, but the DJ's voice is very muted. Volume should not be a problem. My PC sound goes out to a nice 130 wpc integrated amp driving two subwoofers and a pair of very nice minimonitors. I have not had any problems like this before downloading the new release a few days ago. I have not "adjusted" anything, either. Anyone else noticed these problems? Any suggestions?
Oh, yeah, and sometimes skin colors change for no reason back and forth, and sometimes the view kinda zooms in and out for no apparent reason.

Who can tell if there is a problem with the viewer? Or for that matter with the new Havok 4 update or any number of other systems? SL is so serveraly borked lately it is impossible to know if anything is working as it should because SL as a whole is totally broken.

The problem with avatars you mention is due to Avatar Impostors. With the new viewer there is an option in graphics to enable them, it cuts down on the rendering as they are 2d sprites and therefore this cuts down on your lag. There is an option somewhere in graphics to disable them. I personally hate them so keep the box unchecked.

Jem do you have Avatar Imposters set to 'on' in your Graphics Preferences (click on the Graphics tab then 'custom' option to access it) ?
This is designed to lower the resolution of distant avatars in order to improve performance.
Turning this 'off' by removing the check from the box may help you.
It's worth a look.

Check your Windows Volume Control box on your computer. I don't know if it is tied to the SLviewer in any way but I have noticed that the Wave slider has been resetting to about 50% in my Windows Volume Control box. I just slide it back up to 100% and low volume Second Life sounds go back the levels I am used to hearing.

Did you know you can get the benefit of avatar imposters without having them so objectionably close? If you set the avatar mesh detail higher, the distance from the camera they are drawn is increased! So do you want to get higher FPS without looking to blocky? Turn imposters ON with avatar resolution HIGHER, counter-intuitive I know, but wonderful in those crowded areas...
