Island ownership and tier

Heya... It might be that it hasn't gone through on my account yet or whatever, but...

I just got an island. I was paying full sim tier ($195), but sold all my land and got an island instead.
My account page shows this:

Land Holdings

Allowed holdings: 66,048 square meters
Current holdings: 0 square meters
Available for purchase: 65,247 square meters
Peak square meter usage: 44,430 square meters
Total monthly cost: US$195.00

Do I need to do anything else? Downgrade my account? Upgrade it? Anything?
Or will this just resolve itself?

This is normal. Islands don't show up on the "current holdings" meter.

However, even though you've sold your land, you still have to pay your tier for the portion of the current month in which you held the land.

That means you'll be charged $195 on your next tier date, and then no tier from that point forward. You will be charged $295 on the day that is 30 days after the day on which your island was delivered.

All the info you need is actually on the SL site.

Anyway, you don't have to anything, if you do not hold any land, it does not matter what your tier charges are, you will only incur charges in any month subject to the amount of land you own.

Some people worry about this, but from the date of your last bill till the next, if you hold no land there are no charges.

The land tier just means you will not get any reminders if you purchase land to state that you will need to upgrade your tier.

As for your Island, when you receive that I am sure your account will then reflect those charges.

Island fees do _not_ show up in the Total Cost Per Month field; neither do potential fees that you could pay but will not due to not actually owning land.

This is why I'm asking. I've received my island and my account doesn't reflect it.

So, do I set it to zero? The SL website says nothing about downgrading from full-sim, just about makig sure you upgrade to premium.

The original cost for a private island includes tier for the first month of ownership. It's two different parallel systems of tier. You'll still have to pay tier for your mainland parcels for your current tier month, even though you've sold them.
Tier months are calculated differently for privates islands and mainland.
- In mainland, your tier month coincides with the date of the month when you joined SL.
- In private islands, your tier month starts the day you receive your island, and thereof. PI tier and land will not be shown in My Account page.
Now, I don't own a PI, but this is info I've gathered from people who does. Is this correct, anyone?

It's my understanding that you must be a premium member to own a private island, so no, you can't downgrade to basic.
Now, regarding the Land Use Fees page, you don't necessarily need to lower your land settings to zero since you no longer own any mainland, but it wouldn't be a bad idea so you get a big warning sign in case you feel the urge to grab some mainland again in the future.
Remember that even when your settings are zero, you always get 512m2 of tier allowance, in case you still want to keep a little parcel in the mainland.

and it possibly never will. Island tier fees don't show up in your account page. Strange but true.

The wording has changed at some point. I've read that it's considered that the first month's tier is included in the island setup, and so I assume they now consider any tier charge made is to cover for tier for the month following that charge. It was not always presented that way. It used to be made very clear that the billing of tier for a private island was the charge covering tier for the preceding month. It makes no difference in practice of course, as your first charge is still made a month after delivery of the sim - I assume they have reworded it to its current form for some reason. I still consider charges made for tier to me to cover the month preceding it, as at least several of my sims were presented that way (as I have had them years), and I have not received a 'free month' in the mean time to lead me to believe otherwise :D

*whimpers*

So what do I downgrade it to?

I understand that I have to pay the tier for this month, but I certainly don't want to have to pay it next month in addition to the island fee.

It would seem from what other posters have posted in this thread that you don't need to downgrade. However, I would downgrade to 0 tier, though you of course have to keep your premium account. The billing for your island will not be affected by your land use fees, it will be billed seperately.

Tier down to 0. Tier fee to LL is just for mainland. It's not required for owning islands.

Actually, you do have to tier down explicitly. Not doing so (i.e. doing nothing) will cause you to pay money to LL unnecessarily -- for a service you don't use or need.

BTW, I believe that you may also step down from Premium to Basic. Only mainland requires a Premium account to own (if I understand the KB correctly).

No. You have to be Premium to buy an island.

EEEEEE!

Sorry. Still freaking out about having my own island! *lol*

In LL's usual twisted logic you did need to be a premium account to buy a private sim, but you didn't need to stay premium once you owned it.

It could be they solved that by now, but the best place to check would be with actual concierge Lindens (don't use general support because they'll guess an answer without actually knowing the correct answer).

As far as I understand it:

- Tier is tier. Island fees are island fees. Never the twain etc.
- All tier is paid on the same day each month, no matter when land is bought/sold. Island fees are paid on the day of the month when the island went online. As far as I know, if you have several islands, they can all be paid on different days.
- Island fees don't show up in your "total amount due per month" on the My Account page.
- The indicated "sqm available" is the maximum amount of land you can own without being prompted to increase your tier. However, you are charged each month based on the peak amount of land you _actually_ _owned_ during that month, *PLUS* the amount you have donated to groups. (Note: if you have donated the tier to a group you _always_ get charged even if the group isn't using the tier!)
