Take Copy Prim Limit?

Before packaging up a build I usually select the whole structure and Take Copy for safe-keeping in case something goes wrong.

Today, I am trying to Take Copy on a structure that is 257 prims but it won't allow me to do it. I've tried to Take Copy on each linked set and it works, but I can't Take Copy on the entire build as one object.

Does anyone know if there is a prim limit on the Take Copy feature?

There is no limit that i know of.
Something on your end in those link sets are borked. You can take a 5000 prim object if you had it. I have no problems taking a copy of builds over 256/7 prims.

I thought the limit for joined prims was 256 prims.
Also there limit on how far away the prims can be and be joined.
Only way to join more is have some type of scripted device like
Builder Buddy.

But this is about the "Take Copy" function which is not working for Mia. Not linking things.

Mia, you need to closely check what you are selecting to TAKE COPY of. Maybe you do not own all the item or there is something in one of the items that is no copy.

I'll bet anything Briana is correct. Something in one of the items must be no-copy.

Assuming there are no connectivity problems, system errors, etc., there shouldn't be any limit on how much you can take-copy at once. If there is a limit, it certainly isn't 256 prims. I've got items I've take-copied (or is it taken-copies?) that include thousands of prims.

For a while there was an especially annoying bug that resulted in partial takes, which affected both Take Copy and Take. You'd go to take a bunch of objects at once, and about 1/4-1/2 of them would end up staying behind. That was fixed a long time ago, though.

let us know what it was for future reference

I am thinking same thing, something in the pieces is no copy

taking a copy should not limit how many prims are in the copy, it is only when you try to link them that there are limits

Well there must have been a prim or two that was no copy somewhere in my build. I selected each linkset and was able to take copy of the whole build. Total prims manually selected was 255 so whatever those two prims were, must have been causing the problem. Thanks for all your help!!!

Yeah, that will happen if even ONE prim that is in what you selected is somehow no-copy. I've done a successful "Take Copy" on more than 4000 prims at a single selection, with no issues, as long as it was all copyable.

SO I linked as much as I could saved in sections and then did a "take"

OOps I misunderstood.
Never mind hehe.
Sometimes I have issues with take copy but its usually case of bad lag.

well since you're 2 prims shy of your previous total, my guess is that you selected 2 of someone elses....

256 prims as a limit for one object to link together. I think it's fair. Otherwise people could be building a dress made out of thousands of prims, lagging your SL to death.

SL In its history has only had one bug that affected TAKE or TAKE COPY. 530 prims is not much. Trust the tools and their functions.

Take, in all its forms in SL, is safe.
