I want a virtual world that uses the operating system's normal menus, dialog boxes, dropdown and popup lists, etc.

If I set the Windows menu text size or font the virtual world's menu text or size will change to what I chose.

I'm tired of virtual world designers getting paid to reinvent the wheel and replacing the boring old circular wheels with their jazzy new triangular wheels. The old round ones might be dull but they were selecting for rolling not for looking at.

I see the no-build and no-push icons have changed in RC 1.19.

Gee something to write home about! Enhanced discoverability!

My favourite is the RELEASE button dangerously close to the chat buttons. What braniac decided that would be a good idea?

I hatem..theyr'e hard to see and now even more difficult to decipher. "So let's not place the ban symbol OVER the icon of the avatar flying..lets place it next the icon?...plus an arrow?...pointing up?...all in the same space?" Heck might as well place eyes and ears on the avatars in the icon window and sheesh lets paint a back ground too..I'm sure that'll add to me being able to understand what "no fly" means....Or "no push"..omg..an avatar falling down..almost the same color as the tool bar..with a dull red arrow directed at the avatar..and then on the other side a smaller dull red ban symbol..gah LL..K.I.S.S.(Keep It Simple Stupid)The only way I can tell what they mean now is to remember what used to be there.

And the release button now being where the received IM button use to be displayed has me constantly checking my IM window to see who "new" Imd me..haha guess what...noone!...its my release button. Oh and if you play in windowed mode and change the window size all those buttons get squooshed to the center of the screen and they can't moved back..atleast i cant figure out how to yet.

Ok end of minor rant :p

The SL user interface looks the way it does because in order to make it cross-platform without having to write unique code for each platform they use a library that does not even attempt to look like any of the platforms it supports. Surprisingly, in 2008 there still isn't a good solution to this problem. And if you are limited to open source software you're going to be hindered by the open source philosphy, which includes non-conformity and aren'tIwonderfulism.

It'd be nice if LL would support (with coding contributions) a project like WxWidgets, which is potentially a much better cross-platform solution.

Ewww! I would hate to see Second Life start to look like Active Worlds.

I think one of the appeals of SL is that it has a solid game-like interface.

LL needs to make the interface much more customizable and maybe create different layouts for different types of users. Judging by the blog comments it's pretty clear that long term users can get very attached to their button positions, and changing them around can cause people to get very very ANGrrRRRry!!! :mad:

Anyone know why there is delete button in the search window and when I look at profile or group of someone else's that I don't own or belong to I have to save it?
I am sticking with 1.18.2 until I have to upgrade yet things keep changing on server side.
Some how the update button got selected, no clue what it does except leave strange colors it left blue and red particles all over my prims when building, myself and others.

I hate how the Release Keys button moves around the screen. If you have an IM come in, the "you have an IM" box takes up the first bottom left position on the screen. If you sit, the "Stand up" button is on the right of the Release Keys button, though. Without the IM box there the Release Key shifts over to the first position.

I should have taken a picture.

I wish there was a way to remove the "Release Keys" button altogether. I don't use it and would rather it didn't clutter up my screen. It's also irritating, because with the default position, the button makes me think I've got an IM that I ought to check. Yes, I released my AO the first time I noticed it, out of habit. Call me Pavlov's dog.. er.. cat... errr.. dragon, whatever.

I'm still sorting the new places of the other buttons, as well as glaring at the new icons. Is it just me or did the voice enabled/disabled icon vanish?

Shamelessly stolen from yesterday's thread:
From: Cruise Swain
I know how to remove the "Release Keys" button.
Pretty easy.. heres an howto:

Quit Second Life
Go to your root second life directory (C:/Program Files/SecondLifeWindLight)
Go to skins/xui/en-us/
Look for a file named: panel_overlaybar.xml
Open it in a text-editor
Delete the following

<button bottom="1" follows="left|bottom" font="SansSerif" halign="center" height="20"
label="Release Keys" label_selected="Release Keys" left="229"
name="Release Keys" scale_image="true"
tool_tip="A script has taken control of your keys. Click here to release them."
width="102" />

Save the file
Open second life and log in, presto, button gone.

Theres a slight catch, once Second Life gets updated again, and changes are made to the UI, its most likely that the button will be there again and you'll have to delete it from the XML file again..
Other then that, its working for me.

Isn't this what the Dazzle project is about?

Apparently not :( What's been shown so far as downloadables for the Dazzle experiments is closer to the changes that showed up in 1.19, with updated icons and buttons but no native GUI. The theme that turned up in 1.19 is much more usable than the previous Dazzle experiment, which featured such strange things as IM windows with white text on light blue backgrounds without even drop shadows, not-in-Kansas-any-more icons extended to places like inventory, and so on.
