Hi
I found a wonderful shop where I ended up spending quite a bit of money on clothes.

However, when trying them on, it turned out that a jacket (one of a set of two that I bought) is damaged. Instead of rezzing as a coat, I end up a wearing a skirt, which is really just an ugly skirt-like shape. The other jacket in the package is fine.

I rather like this set and would like to have the coat.
Of course, this shop, like many says "no transfers", no returns etc. But obviously I've bought defective merchandise.

In these cases, do I try to get back to the designer of the thing, or the shop? What are the odds of getting this resolved? (I would like the coat but I feel that at the very least I ought to get some money back).

Contact the designer and explain the issue. If something was boxed incorrectly, they'll usually replace it for you. If it's a reseller, you may want to contact them instead.

Some coats and jackets DO use the skirt piece as an extender, btw.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Hi Brann,

What you refer to as a skirt is probably the lower part of the coat and from the sounds of it made out of prims. This is probably the intention of the designer.
If it is modifiable, you can try to edit it to better fit your shape. If you can, make a copy first so that if you mess up. If you need help with how to edit it let us know :)

Brann, I may be wrong, but I think the set of 2 you bought are the jacket alone (the top part) and the coat (the top part plus the bottom part worn together as a set). You may be trying to wear the bottom part only, and I suspect that's where you're mistaken. If you wear both parts, do they look like they complement each other?

Thanks, all.
What you say about the "skirt" being the bottom part of the jacket makes a lot of sense.

I'll have to check when I got back later today. When I tried on the long coat, I was still looking at me from behind and it was just a blocky, fuzzy looking triangle skirt shape. But now I'm thinking that it was, as you said, the bottom of the coat and I just didn't wait for it to rez properly, simply assuming it was the wrong item.

Boy, I learn new things every day.

I'll confirm this later - and will give the name of the shop, too (I can't remember it now). They have an absolute super line of casuals for excellent prices.

When it comes to clothes merchants, I have found that the merchants are usually quite responsive when you ask for help. If you continue to have problems with the coat, try contacting the merchant and describing the problem. (I do this by writing down the problem on a notecard and giving it to the merchant- IMs can be capped and therefore yours might not get through.) The last time I had a problem with clothes I bought, it wasn't even really the merchant's fault- I tried to modify a prim skirt to fit my shape, and I botched it. The skirt was no-copy, so I wasn't able to make a copy before trying to fit it. When I contacted the merchant about what had happened, she just gave me another skirt, but for this one she set the permissions copy/no-transfer, so I could make as many copies and make as many attempts at modification as I wanted. So don't be afraid to ask the merchant if you continue to have problems. In my experience, polite questions have received good responses.

Contact the seller/designer.

My GF bought something this morning and she was not happy with the clothes.

She contacted the designer with her complaints; De designer asked to give her the clothes back and the designer gave her the money (500l$) back without a problem.

A commercial designer listens to its customers.

If you're lucky the seller will respond to your situation. If you're extremely lucky they might give you an exchange. But don't count on it because for the most part you'll get no responses. Their usual burnt out lame excuse is their IM's are capped so they didn't get your mesage. Some will be courteous and will help you but many won't.

Example:

I purchased 3 pairs of jeans. Now, normally I do not buy non-modifiable clothes of any kind due to the common problems with certain clothes and the fact you can't adjust them in any way, but I gambled and got them anyway.

Two of the jeans were straight legs but they're very tight fitting and looking and the third pair which by the way are Dolce Gabana, jeans, these pants are what we call 'high waters' they didn't go all the way down as long pants normally do, they're just over my ankles.

I sent the guy both a notecard and an IM letting him know the problem and just as I expected I've gotten no response. In the message I explained the problems on the pants and I asked if he exchanged all the pants for mod ones I would buy several extra pairs. He hasn't responded but I didn't expect him to since I already knew this would happen.

A friend gave me a gift card from a men's shop. I have sent many notecards to this shops owner letting him know I want to redeem the certificate. Although, I've seen him accept these NC's he's never acknowledge my messages, has never answered me.

This is just a small sample of what you can expect when you buy items in sl. Yes, always send them a notecard and an IM explaining the situation but don't ever get your hopes up they'll do the right thing. It's all about greed and it's all a gamble.

Not everyone or everytime will be like this but these type situations happen way too often so be prepared.

Aw, there's our little ray of sunshine! :)

Every single designer I have ever spoken to has been EXTREMELY helpful. One actually gave me 12,000L worth of free merchandise because she read a comment I made on someone else's blog praising her work. Another gave me a ridiculous number of left (I think it was left) shoes because I wanted them unscripted...no charge.

Be friendly, be polite, and have a little patience. The designers have real lives too and they may not always be in-world on a regular basis. If you haven't heard back in a week or so, send them a gentle reminder.

And, yes, IMs do get capped.

I can relate to the not getting help, but not all designers/content creators are the same

I like to believe that the majority are helpful and we just have the bad luck of running into the bad apples

good luck with the jacket

I offer a full money back guarantee on all transferable items, provided the return is within a reasonable period of time. I found this actually increases business, because the customer sees less risk in trying stuff. Sadly, this is neither common nor required in SL.

I'd say always contact the designer, by IM, and by notecard. Some have email addresses in their profile (I know I do) which is the best way to reach me.

I am human, I make mistakes, and sometimes I don't get things right....but....if I don't KNOW there is a challenge, I can't fix it. My "jedi mind powers" of motherhood with my kids don't seem to extend into SL....so unless someone tells me something isn't to their standard with my creations, I can't do anything about it.

Even though my stuff is no transfer, I can see who buys what...so I have transaction records, and I can check the item myself. I don't do "returns" but if there is a genuine problem, I will do everything in my power (within reason) to be sure the customer is satisfied with the purchase without putting myself out of business to do it.

Do contact the designer. Give them a chance.

:)

Only when it's sunny. But you can't call sunshine when what you've gotten is wet from rain.
