Why can't I browse west of coordinate 255 on the map? I was thinking of buying a region way out west, but if I can't browse out there, what's the point?

No, when you are in-world and bring up the world map, you can't type in a coordinate larger than 255 in the bottom right corner.
The land store goes clear to 604

Ah right..those do not apply to the entire map of SL..they simply apply to the individual sims, the first two apply to longitude and latitude within the sim and the third to the altitude above (or below I suppose) the sim.

If you want to see the land available, for islands etc (including way out west where I am) you need to go to the Land Store that has a map (of sorts) showing all the land for sale and all the land reserved (and hence unavailable) :D

When I say land for sale...for islands..I mean empty spaces where land can go..

Once you've chosen the position for your island from the land store map..be sure to go check that position on the in-world map..they tend to differ somewhat (the Land Store map isn't updated as efficiently as the In World map). Otherwise you might find when you get your island that there's islands around you that weren't thare on the land store map (which has implications for future expansion plans.)
