SHOCK! HORROR!!

15-year-old terrorists being trained by US Military in Second Life!!!

"I really joined Second Life for the sex" says 15-year old Ahmed, but when I saw that the US Army was offering "virtual experiences like jumping out of airplanes, and rappelling off of towers and using a weapon" I thought that it would be a good way of getting my own 72 virgins in After Life.

Well...ya know....SL does offer yet another avenue for marketing to anyone who's interested.....including the Army..... On the other hand...I hardly think jumping out of planes in SL....or shooting weapons......is ANYTHING like the real experience so the idea of 'training' seems a little ridiculous. We're not that immersive yet. But...hey...anyone out there ever read "Enders Game" Perhaps we're heading that way.......

(if Habib just stays in SL....he'll get his 70 virgins on one of the plethera of sex sims....hey...perhaps we can END terrorism with SL! Dirka Dirka!)

From the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony
There is some argument about what qualifies as ironic, but all senses of irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between what is said and what is meant; or between an understanding of reality, or an expectation of a reality, and what actually happens.

So I don't think it's ironic, moronic is more like it!

But initially Ender thought it *was* a game.

You know I have nothing against recruits, nor their families and understand that in the society we live in that there is a need for a army, i just wish there wasn't a need for one, or that young people have to go to war and a war that's not necessarily for any reason other than it's political or for dominance and that recruits die, no one should die for a bad reason.

the pun was more about that they're advertising in Second Life to get players off it and into their Real Life army, that's the irony i was talking about.

Why isn't Dekka's comment cool? I served, and I support his comment completely. Like I said on November 11th, it is the brave young men who die for the schemes of the cowardly old men.

Some have already pointed out how much the targeting electronics in planes and tanks are like video games. Thus the targets are not experienced as human. Armies and countries have been painting the enemy as less than human for centuries. It makes perfect sense to me that the army would jump on the opportunity to design the video game themselves.

Yes, it is delicious irony when put next to the fearmongering image of terrorists using sl to recruit or train.

Beware what you ask for, U.S. Army. Second Life tends to attract users with peculiar tastes.

QFT.

Whenever I see news like this, I feel a terrible urge to go to the sim and cycle through my weirdest avatars, maybe engage in a little roleplay, shoot eggs at stuff, etc.
