I am trying to download some photos from SL to my pc, I can't seem to figure out how to do it for some reason. Can someone tell me if it can be done with photos from my current collection, or do I have to take all new photos and save them to disk that way? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

As long as they're full perms, you can open the image, then go to File > Save Texture As... to download.
If you're not sure about the perms, right-click the image in Inventory and select Properties. Make sure all three permissions (mod, copy, trans) boxes are checked and you should be all set.

Easy.
Regardless of permissions - all you have to do is display your photo in world and hit the Print Screen key. This will copy the entire screen to the clipboard. Then you can use Paint or any other image editor to cut out the photo and save it.

Doesn't this end up saving it in some strange format that most of the regular image programs can't handle - so then you have to go download a special freebie program to open it?

Not sure...maybe. I always use GIMP with my pics and it has no problem opening them, whatever it is.

I've just started learning Gimp, so I still use my old picture editor for most of my pic editing. I think I remember, maybe before I downloaded Gimp, having to go find a freebie to open those files saved from SL that were not pics-straight-to-hard-drive ones. Nice to know that Gimp works for those -- I think Photoshop does too, but that one is too expensive for the amount and type of editing that I do.

From: LittleMe Jewell Doesn't this end up saving it in some strange format that most of the regular image programs can't handle - so then you have to go download a special freebie program to open it? It saves it in .tga format, yes. This can be opened by most image viewers, but you might need something like IrfanView (freeware) to convert it to .jpg format. From: Kira Cuddihy I have never been able to find my clipboard. Do you have it hidden in some strange roleplay sim Peter? If you're using Windows XP: Start > Run > (then type in) Clipbrd That opens up the Clipboard Viewer. Alas, it's not available in Vista (or, at least, I've not found it). Once you've copied the screen to your clipboard, just open any image editor and select the 'paste' option (you might have to create a new blank image first, then paste the screenshot onto that new image).

GIMP works fine!

From: Ann Launay GIMP works fine! Of course it does, and I've just recommended it today to someone who asked me for recs for free image editing programs. I just usually recommend IrfanView if someone only wants to convert image file formats rather than have a fuller editing program

From: Kira Cuddihy I have never been able to find my clipboard. Do you have it hidden in some strange roleplay sim Peter? Kira, the Clipboard is a part of the operating system, not SL. It's what enables you to copy and paste data from, say, a web page into a paint program, or from a spreadsheet into a word processing document. You can't "find" it in the sense of seeing a separate program open up on your screen (well, unless you use some third party clipboard viewer utility). But every time you copy something from somewhere, that data is placed on the Clipboard, a temporary holding area. The PRINT SCREEN button on your keyboard copies an image of whatever is on your computer's monitor at that moment to the Clipboard. You can then paste that image into a new file in Photoshop or GIMP or another paint program.

Printscreen jokes aside ...
Ann's answer is the correct way to do this. You have to have the screenshot opened before you can download it. Just double click it in inventory to open the picture. Then the Save As option from the File menu should be available.
Saving snapshots to the hard drive now uses the png format, too! No more huge bitmaps.

So, if and when I ever upgrade to the latest and greatest viewer, I will finally have to learn Gimp or use the freeware program to convert every program to something my picture editor can deal with - lovely. Why can't we just pic the freakin format we want it saved in?
