I am thinking about downgrading to basic from my premium account, and before I do I wanted to know what downsides were to doing so? I dont currently own land and with school and RL commitments I find I dont have much time for SL. I have a ton of stuff in inventory, and a few thousand L's so I dont want to lose anything. If I downgrade, am I just losing the stipend, ability to talk to someone at LL ref. problems, and right to own mainland? The thing I really am concerned about is losing my avi and all her possessions. If I downgrade, does my account stay active? Also, if I decide to go premium again, say 6 months down the road, is this whole thing fairly seamless? (ie. Premium to basic to Premium again)
Thanks for your help Allysa =^.^=

Downgrading won't affect the avi in any way, unless Linden Labs decides to do something really stupid like limiting free account's inventories.
Keep in mind that if Linden Labs adjusts their stipend for any reason, you won't be 'grandfathered' in if you have downgraded.
(I did the whole downgrade/upgrade thing a couple of years ago. It's seamless.)

I did this. Had a premium acct, owned land and everything, then just got bored with SL so I downgraded to basic and left for months and months. Then I got interested again about two months ago and came back, just had basic for a while then after a few weeks went back to premium. My avi and all her possessions were intact as the day I left and yes, the transition was seamless. Hope that helps.

From: Allysa Messmer ability to talk to someone at LL ref. problems You can still submit Support tickets, albeit on a limited number of topics, as a Basic account. And everyone can use the Billing phone numbers.

I downgraded recently. My reason was that I was acquiring more land on a private sim, and wanted to redirect the $US9.95 per month to the owner of the private sim to help cover my increased tier costs. One thing I didn't expect was that my account stayed in a "downgrading" state until the end of the billing cycle. During this time, I couldn't buy ANY land, not even on a private island where my account status is not really relevant. When I attempted to purchase the island land which was set for sale to me for $0L, I got a message "Cannot buy now: There has been an error while fetching land buying information. You have initiated the downgrade process. Your account will downgrade to Basic Access on Friday, January 4th 2008". So, if you're downgrading for the same reason I did, buy the new land BEFORE you downgrade! It doesn't sound like this is relevant to the OP. I post it here for future reference

If you're on yearly or quarterly (and the renewal date is "far" into the future) it's probably best to wait until you get an early (14 days before they bill) or the "about to be billed" reminder since you won't be able to even buy estate land (in your name, "Buy for group" will work fine) from the time you downgrade to the time you're actually basic again.

Thanks for your help Allysa =^.^= I downgraded my account and had no problems..you just need to make sure you have positive credit with your account before you do it or they *will* disable it temporarily until it's paid..Although a friend of mine downgraded and wasn't able to log in for 2 days. I think that's the punishment, but other than that, it won't hurt you. Having a premium account is only good for ppl who want to own islands..if you ask me. I never ever ever needed to have a premium account and was paying $10 a month for nothing.

you can still own, buy, and sell land on the mainland as a 'FREE' downgraded non-premium member.
you just have to use 'buy for group' and have some one 'donate' tier, or rent it.
no reason to have a premium account at all. there is nothing you can not do without one.
plus renting tier is ALOT cheaper then gettin it from LL as a premium, cuz ppl who rent it sell it at rates ALOT cheaper then LL charges (unless you are at 1/2 a sim or more in land usage)
