Is there a way to set up a sound "chime" or something along this line for when friends come and go. I'm often alt tabbed and it'd be nice to hear a ding when someone comes on. I know i get a noise when i recieve an IM, but it'd be nice to get a similar noise when friends arrive into SL.

Create your own version of the avi detector that not only sends you a chat msg when a friend logs in, but plays a sound also -- or pay the maker of one of the current avi detectors to do this modification.
