I remember the option for recording movie used to be in the same menu as snapshot. But I couldn't find it now.

Has LL moved this option to a different location? Or they have completely removed it?

Advanced > Recorder

If you don't have the Advanced menu available, CTRL+ALT+D will show it.

The recorder in the advanced menu is a different animal, it lets your avatar retrace its steps, or rather flies you around to where you recorded.

The built-in video recorder was terminally buggy and put out of its misery. Even Lindens had given up trying to use it, and were using external recording programs.

I totally need to actually try that out. That sounds awesome.

For a little extra fun try it with flight assist, the acceleration should still work.

my son uses a program called Hypercam, which can record what you are doing on the screen, unfortunatly it says hyper cam on the top when you playback unless you get the payed version. I havent used it myself but he uses it in another online game.

The free CamStudio does that too.

Fraps is not free but is cheap and awesome.

Thanks everyone. The original record is crappy. The playback is in fast motion and file size is really large.

Would like to know if there are any other on screen recorder other than those already suggested.

Thanks :D

most recorders will be huge files since it's raw output mostly.

You need to convert it when done to what format, wmv/divx/xvid/mpeg/etc

you can use windows movie maker that comes with xp to compress it.

I'd second Osprey's suggestions. I spent a while looking around for suitable programmes and these were the best I found at the free/cheap end. Others may have more advice if you want to spend more.

Cam Studio will record anything you do onscreen and so is great if you ever have to put together a video tutorial for any software. For SL it lowered my framerate too much to be useful.

Fraps will record in good quality any OpenGL application, including SL. It does lower the framerate a bit but still produces nice footage. It only costs around $30 IIRC and there's a free demo version you can try (records 30 seconds at a time).

That Advanced>Recorder thing sounds great fun!

ETA: Another thing I came across when I was looking around was Virtualdub. It's a free video converter which converts just about any video or audio format with any codec to just about any other format. It's great for all those "Windows cannot open this file" moments.
