I am a complete newbie here and have just rented a property. I would like to purchase a security orb but the landlord says its not allowed.

Are there any devices that I can place inside the property that would tell me how many intruders that have entered?

I can then present this to the landlord and maybe they will allow a security orb.

Teal, just keep in mind that if the land permissions are set right (autoreturn or no rez ability to non-group members) any "intruders" won't be able to leave a mark. They won't be able to take anything away anyway, Chances are that you will not even notice that they have been there.

If people walk in against your will while you are there, this is a different story. Ask you landlord to ban these by name. Usually he will be happy to do so.

What experiences have you had that lead you to the conclusion that you need a security orb?

Yeah, we kind of need more background here to know whether this is going in the right direction. One question is whether this is a skybox or a ground-level build; that's relevant because above a certain height, parcel access controls don't work (50m Above Ground Level for "whitelist" controls--allow this group and these individuals, which is almost never what you really want--and 768m AGL for "blacklist" bans of individuals, which you may need). If you're above that 768 AGL, there really may be a need for a security system just to keep out known harassers. Otherwise... well, you'd have to be extraordinarily unlucky to be getting random unwanted visitors with any frequency. The grid is very spread out and sparsely populated, so unless there's something special about your location (near an InfoHub or some popular club, perhaps), encountering strays might be more a special event than an intrusion.

A security orb usually works parcel based. If you rent an apartment, then the parcel is not only yours, but more people live on the same parcel.

This means the orb will boot everyone out of their house living close to you.
That's why the landlord doesn't want this.

But there are like said earlier scripts you can put in carpets that register who has been there.
But that won't be any use for security.

If you want privacy, and an orb that boots people off your land, then rent group owned land. Small parcels that are completely yours, and you can do with it whatever you want, even plant trees from the build menu.

However, this will probably cost you around 10 US dollars a month for small 400 prim limit land, and you need to build your own house first.

good thing is, you can put in your own media, music, and terraform the land to your needs.

I got her all set up with a visitor list maker, so she can at least prove there are people going in there.

I do not understand why a security orb would, if set up properly.... maybe you should move.
