Well I gave my email to get on the Watch List on the Land Auction page and what do you know, now I'm getting spam at that address when I never did before. You see, it's powered by ebay, the let's-sell-your-email-to-anybody-with-a-dollar people.
Beware.

I'd AR Guy or Jack for that one, Ray. Really..
At the very least a JIRA would be appropriate.

At the very least a JIRA would be appropriate. Well all I have to go on is I never got spam to my gmail account and I signed up four days ago and now I'm getting spam. So it's probably not enough evidence to go on yet. Anyone care to sign up and see if it happens to you? EDIT: I just realized I have not used that address anywhere else. It's for my offline IMs only. So there has to be a correlation.

From: Rebecca Proudhon UGH. Spam is insane. How many people actually read their Spam or buy things from Spam? What are you talking about? I'm grateful for spam. Without spam I'd still have a higher mortgage, pay too much for toner cartridges and medicines, and still have those embarrassing erection problems.

It is extremely common practice to sell data these days - was there an opt out on accepting? If so and you didn't notice/click it, contact them and ask to be excluded from mailings.
If there wasn't then complain like mad.

It might be amusing to get a list of av names and send out email to FirstnameLastname@gmail.com, and FirstnameLastname@hotmail.com, and a few others, just something saying hello, this is so and so from SL just saying hello, and see how many responses you get from SL users with such readily findable email addresses.
I hope it was normal business spam and not penis enlargers and viagra ads.

I've been using the same ebay email address for years and haven't been spammed, which is shocking since everyone I've ever done business with through ebay receives that address.
Are you receiving random snakeoil type spam or ebay services spam? If the latter, there's probably an opt-out burried and concealed somewhere.

When I was a noobie I went to one of those ATM machines and made $L40. The email address I used started getting SPAM and then it increased each day. When it reached 200 emails per day I killed the account and set the server to bounce the mail with no explanation. "CX"

there was no opt out button. I deleted the spam before I could find out what EMILY had to offer me. Something about party supplies...

check out sneakemail.com -- let's you generate new random email addresses for everyone if you wish. If an address starts getting spam'd, you just kill that one and it affects nobody else. Those are pretty much the only email addresses I use for third party stuff any more.

From: someone UGH. Spam is insane. How many people actually read their Spam or buy things from Spam? Enough do. When the cost of advertising is virtually zero, you don't need many hits to profit. I get about a pound of junk paper mail daily and the senders of that paid for it to be printed and sent to me and it is still worth it to them for me to trash it.

When it reached 200 emails per day I killed the account and set the server to bounce the mail with no explanation. It would be better to just kill them if that's a server option. Bouncing them only adds to other people's spam problems, because the spammers don't use their own email addresses - they use other people's, like mine for instance, and it's those other people who receive a flood of bounced emails quite often.

I did the same thing on the auction web site recently with an address I use exclusively for Second Life things, and I haven't had one piece of spam. There is a rudimentary spam filter, but not impressive enough to catch every piece coming through...
Could the address have got on spam lists by another route?
By the way, my address is bill.gates@microsoft.com if anyone wants to add it to a spam list....

Well I know one person in real life that really likes his spam. He says he gets a lot of interesting offers and has to save them. I told him I just delete it all. I don't get it.
