Well, character "Preferences" are stored locally on the machine, so you'd have to reset all those--which is a good thing, because stuff like graphics preferences may be very machine-specific. But "avatar setting"... if that means, like, settings from Edit Appearance, no, that's not local to the machine. (Well... there are ways to store a skin texture on a local machine and have it use that texture while baking appearance, but... not a typical thing, at all.)

It's also possible to manually copy the character Preferences from machine to machine, too. (Actually, it's easy on Linux; surely possible on XP; probably a nightmare on Vista. No clue, on Macs.)

When you use 2 different computers, your inventory will remain the same (everything in it), and your avatar will look the same way as when you logged out. You will also log in to the last place you were in the other computer. (provided last location is set as entry point)

Anything you have set in the Preferences button will NOT be saved when you freshly install the Second Life client on another computer. Things such as voice being on, advanced graphics sliders, or enabling voice streaming will all have to be re-enabled. Some things have to be readjusted in world as well. Things in the Client/Server tabs must be redone. Settings for your inventory, such as sorting things by Name and not Date, will have to be readjusted.
