Not sure where im meant to post this so ill just post it in here.

I was just on Help Island Public and some guy started shooting at me and a friend, nowhere near the main group of people we decided to return fire thinking we werent doing anything wrong. This went on for a short while.

After a little while i am suddenly logged out and cant log in for an hour (so it says)

Was i doing anything wrong? and if so why wasnt i just ejected from the reigon? Why cant i get back into SL at all? Its a little extreme...

As someone who pays for their life in SL (as many others do) i find this disgusting, and id like some answers.

Help Island is for what the name says - help. You want firefight, go find a war zone.
You get AR'd for response just as much as initiating an incident. Just be grateful it was only an hour.

You are not supposed to return griefing with the same tools. If you are attacked, pushed, orbitted... you TP away and/or file an Abuse Report (AR).

I understand that it's common for griefers to hang out together, start shooting at someone and when they defend themself, they file AR's. So then you get banned for an hour. If it's more than 1 AR against the same person, it goes quick to get banned.

Lesson learnt, next time you don't fire back.

What you pay for SL doesn't give you any privilegies, sorry.

thats ridiculous that i should have to TP away from a region because someone fires at me. people randomly fire at people in regions all the time, ive encountered it plenty of times. im not going to complain every time someone does it.

but anyway...

all im saying is i can think of a better response than the one that was dealt.

i wasnt looking for a war, i initiated nothing. defending myself is hardly in the same boat as initiating a conflict, i dont agree the punishment should be the same.

Defense does not exist in SL because you have no need to defend yourself. Don't argue with this because it is not my view, it is LL's.

Just read the community standards, mute, AR, ignore, move on. Those are your only options.

You broke the same rules the people attacking you broke.

I mean, do you only think of yourself? What about everyone else around you are bothering by firing back.

The defense reasoning is silly, because no one can actually do anything to you. It's a virtual environment. An ava bumps you around or shoots you with a push weapon, you get pushed - you don't lose inventory, your ava doesn't "die" ... you just get moved a bit. Or a lot.

You don't have to TP away. You can sit on a prim and fire off an AR instead. Much more effective weapon, as you've witnessed.

I think you are underestimating how alienating it can be for new members, many many of whom have never played combat games, to have one of their first experiences in SL be witnessing combat. Help Island is for helping people. If new members don't feel "safe" there (absurd though that may sound), or get the impression that SL is just for kids who want to play shoot-em-up (and btw, HOW old are you?), they will log out and never return. I think LL's response in this case was entirely justified.

If you want to duel with someone, invite them to another sim, one with damage enabled, and have at it. Otherwise, either AR them or inform them that THEY can be suspended (as they no doubt were) for using weapons at Help Island.

Yup.

It's very difficult to keep Help Island Public from descending into complete chaos, so the AR threshold is hair-triggered and LL response tends to be very swift. There's no faster, surer way to lose an account than to grief HIP.
