Hi Everyone
I have just joined. I have tried to download/install SL but it hasn't worked. It seems to have downloaded OK (I saved it to my PC) but then when I clicked 'open' after it had finished downloading there was an error message.
I have looked on the help pages, it says:
"Windows Minimum requirements:
Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL Operating System: 2000, XP, or Vista Computer Processor: 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better Computer Memory: 512 MB or more Screen Resolution: 1024x768 pixels Graphics Card for XP/2000**: NVIDIA GeForce 2, GeForce 4 MX or better OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250 or better OR Intel 945 chipset" I have Windows XP, Broadband connection and enough memory space, also my Screen Resolution is: 1024x768 pixels.
"Computer Processor: 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better"
I have no idea what this means or if my PC has it. How do I find out what mine is?
Is there an E-mail address that you can write to for help/advice?
I have no idea what video card my PC has either, how do I find this out?
Thanks in advance! Hope someone can help me!

It's telling you you need to have at least a P3 @ 800mhz. Right click My Computer, choose properties, and it should tell you the type and speed of your processor right there.
As for the install error, whats the error say, exactly?

Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon and select Properties. You should see your processor info on the General tab. For your video card, go to the Hardware tab and click the 'Device Manager' button. When that window opens, click the + sign next to Display adapters and you'll see your card information.

Unfortunately I can't copy and paste the error message but it says at the end of it "1-19-1-4_setup.exe is not a valid win 32 application" What does that mean?! Thanks for your reply.

Hi For the Computer Processor bit I did what you said and it said: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.50 GHz 2.49GHz 192 MB of RAM I have no idea if that's good or bad though?! They said "Windows Minimum requirements: Computer Processor: 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better " Is mine better or worse? For the video card I clicked on the Hardware tab, clicked the 'Device Manager' and then clicked the + sign next to Display adapters like you said and it just said: SiS 650 I have no idea if that's good or bad! I don't know if that works with SL or if it's old, etc If you click on the 'SiS 650' and then click on the tab that says 'Driver' it says 'Driver Version: 6.13.10.2050' is this the video card as well? Thanks for your help.

Your possessor meets the requirements but I have doubts about your system memory, and video card.
"ISiS 650 Video card" I googled it and I found no relevant results. 198mb of ram is about 300mb short of minimum requirements.
I highly doubt if Second Life installed / started that you would be able to run second life with your computer configuration.
The minimum requirements for Second Life on there own are misleading, if you even barely meet them then you will have an overall bad experience.

Amy, go to the "NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Suddenly my SL doesn't work anymore!" thread and near the end, MacPhisto has given instructions on a alternate viewer until you get this figured out. i don't know how secure it is, so i would be careful with money transactions, also don't know if it crashes alot, etc.... but at least you'll get a little taste of SL while you wait to solve your problem.

That looks screwy. You processor is pretty powerful, but your memory is way, way too low for pretty much any modern use of a computer. If your computer was sold that way, it's fairly shady practice; no processor that powerful should be sold with that little RAM. Or possibly, your RAM chips may be fried. But even then, that shouldn't have anything to do with the "...is not a valid win 32 application" error you see. That sounds a lot like simply a bad download. When you deleted it and downloaded it again, did you clear your browser cache to force it to actually re-download the file?

It's probably SiS 650; the SiS are a fairly common line of onboard graphics chip. The SiS are specifically mentioned as *not* compatible with SL, though that doesn't necessarily mean it will not run at all. I'm not really up on all the model numbers of the SiS line, but from a quick scan, it seems a fairly low-power card, and probably not capable of running SL as anything but a slideshow even if it *can* run.

yes and i remebered this last night in bed, it is showing you have 192 of ram this means you have a 256 stick of ram or two 128s and your vidio card is using the other 64 and no matter what veiwer you run a 64 meg vidio card is not going to run SL very well

I can't remember where I looked now! lol I was sure I had lots of memory left. Does SL use loads of memory then? I also have McAfee on my PC could that be stopping it or the firewall? "did you clear your browser cache to force it to actually re-download the file?" No, I didn't know I had to! I don't know how to do that. How do I do that? Thanks

Hi again Yes it is SiS, I must have made a typo! Does that mean I can't use SL until I get a new PC? Or would buying a new video card work? I don't even know how much they cost! Are they expensive? Also, I have quite a lot of memory on my PC but I don't want to use it all up for SL! Thanks for your help.

Hi I did this the other day but it didn't work! I downloaded it and it downloaded OK but when I clicked on 'open' nothing happened so I went to where the shortcut was but when I double clicked on it or right clicked 'open' it just showed me lots of icons, it didn't open any game! There are a few folders too and when you click on them they just show you lots more icons! I couldn't see an icon that would open the game. I was going to delete it but will there be other things on my PC now from the download? How do I find them and delete them too? Thanks for your help.

Thanks Depends a little on which browser you're using. On Firefox, you can do Tools/Clear Private Data..., make sure "Cache" is selected and click "Clear Private Data Now". (Uncheck the others if you want to keep browsing history etc). Internet Explorer has something similar in Tools/Internet Options somewhere. But: Doh, I misread your specs as a 4-CPU machine (which would be quite a beast), not as the chip type Pentium 4, and only realized it when you said it was 5 years old. That is not spectacular, but still enough to run SL. But your RAM is too low. You do *not* have "quite a lot of memory" at 192Mb; as has been mentioned, you generally need at least 512Mb to run SL properly, and preferably even more. Most modern computers count memory in gigabytes (1000's of Mb). Your graphics chip is flat out not good enough. It's an unsupported brand, and way, way underpowered for SL. You *can* update that separately, at not too outrageous prices. I'll let a US resident comment on that, though, since I am not quite in the loop when it comes to US prices. So bottom line is, your computer as is is not powerful enough to run SL; sorry. You *can* upgrade it piecemeal, but with a five-year old computer, your money is probably better spend totally replacing it; otherwise, some bottleneck in the old system would likely still hold you back, wasting a fair bit of the power your upgrades would give you.
