Protected land

Since I've been in SL, visits to mainland have been short and I haven't done a lot of exploring on them. Going to a specific landmarked place, sure, but beyond that, very little seeking.

Tonight I found a Linden road and followed it and noticed that I was on protected land. My understanding of protected land is that it is just that - it's protected and not even supposed to be built on. Yet, there were so many ad farms that I was appalled, and a few buildings.

Am I incorrect in my understanding of protected land?

Protected land shouldn't allow building on it, but building right next to it on privately owned land is fine. Along the road is a common location for dense clusters of ad farms.

The protected land near my place is no-build, has auto-return set, is no-damage, and is no-push. However, it does allow object entry and scripts. I think this is pretty typical. I think this is typical and think it's a generally good set of options. It does make it impossible to rez your car so you can drive down the road though.

That's land that has for whatever reason reverted to Linden ownership (usually by being abandoned by the owner, or their pre-paid year of premium ran out and they didn't renew it, so any land they had became abandoned.)

The Linden road near my land is in the Maintenance group. I assume this is what you mean. I can't say for sure what it is but I'm guessing it's land that requires some degree of building/maintenance. This would be, for example, land that has, or should have, roads and where people can make requests like "please remove roadside wall so I can make a driveway". It would be also be, as Solomon said, abandoned land.

This is opposed to the full water sim north of me that's not in the Maintenance group.

Cool. By following the road, I moved from seeing ad farms near protected land to a few beautiful sims including where they held the Linden snowball fight. Worth the excursion :)

Cool. Please don't be discouraged from exploring the mainland. Yeah, there's ugly junk/ad farms, ban lines, overzealous security scripts, and other crap, but there's also some really nice places.
