When I last created an alt back in march 2007, there was an option to pay 9.95, when I tried to do so this week via Orientation Station and the Linden version, there was no such option.

As far as I know you no longer pay to create an alt. Can't be entirely sure since I've never done it, but from what others have said here, it's free.

I created my first alt nearly a year ago which I paid for (premium too). I created a further one to be basic back in May when people were reporting non-charging. By some bug, I didn't get the confirmation email for this one so cos it was free, created another which did get the email. I raised a ticket on the non-email one and LL sent later they'd activated them.
And that .. dear readers .. is why I have four avies now LOL

There are unspecified limits. Create enough alts and you'll get a message saying you can create no more. If you work out how to create another (either by spoofing your IP or creating a new email address), don't be surprised if you find half your alts disabled in a few months time and told to delete some of them. Remember: They've done that before (end of last year I think it was).
Edit: But yeah, there's no $10 USD charge any more.

I told my RL about this and what did they do? They went and tried it out and created an alt! What do I care, it's up to them I just work for my RL. Anyway, it was all done through legitimate channels, all above board, like, so I can't do much about it. Apparently this so-called 'alt' has only been employed as a functionary so I can test out things with someone. Hey-ho! But this highlights to me what few rights us avatars have when it comes to the actions of our RL's!

From: Bodhisatva Paperclip I thought it was so you could play Bridge. I appreciate your level of thinking .. cards .. yes! ... a string quartet would have been taking the p**s!
