Hi, Is anyone using the ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics chip with Vista to run SL. If so, comments, please.
I found a new laptop I am considering and don't want to purchase if it won't work with SL. Can't seem to find any that have anything listed on the requirements list.

It was running fine until the new viewer update and now it is acting up, I'd say it is on the SL side since it was working perfectly prior to the viewer. Have tried running in 32 bit emulator mode, updated drivers, adjusting graphics in game to low doesn't seem to help either. Not sure the cause of the issues, looking for a solution now. The only answer I get from live support is 'your system is not supported by SL we cannot assist you'

One of the things about SL is, it's a moving target. The Lindens are constantly adding new features that push the limits of graphics and processing power.
It sounds to me like you're starting out on the low end of the ATI line. Even if you get SL to run, it probably won't be usable by the end of the year.

I can only repeat stay away from anything ATI for Secondlife. It was never properly supported and it still is not. I just returned an ATI 4870 card for a Nvidia GTX260. And it simply works. As does older Nvidia's like 8600GT or FX570m in my laptop.

Yeah ditto..... I've heard nothing but complaints about ATI..... I've been running SL with nVidia since I landed on the grid in early 07.....and it has always performed beautifully. I started with a 7600 card.....have upgraded to an 8800......no problems at all.  (well....the texture glitch was annoying but there was a walk around so it wasn't a big deal....and it seems to have been resolved with the latest update) I've been doing my own in-world investigating too....trying to help my brother & sister find better laptops that wont cost them a limb or a first born.  The people that seem to have the best things to say about performance.....are using nVidia cards. |
