HI all i have already posed the question of whether or not people would buy brand named goods ( eg gucci watch, mercedes cars) within secondlife and you have informed me it would depend on the quality of the items you wouldnt just buy them because they were brand names. so im trying to explore other gaps in the market within second life...i am doing this for a university study so would be gratefulk for any feedback you could give me!

If we knew, we'd be making and selling them, not posting them on a public forum.

I never know what a gap is until I see it. I often don't know I really need something until the need arrives, or until I see it at a store. If I could tell you or your business partners (because I sincerely doubt this has a thing to do with any un-named university's study), then I would. Or jes build it myself. _____________________

adjustable centrepoint
It's weird the axis are always fixed. To make it adjustable will make building a lot more easy and there would be a whole new world of possibilities. I could say more about it but if people don't understand that this actually would create a whole new world they won't try to make work of it anyway. ^_^ *edit* I see, I didn't read your opening post...I am not a consumer...lol...misguiding thread title ![]() |

@buffy Tiratzo:
Sounds like a bad idea. Brand names are trademarks. If you want to used them you need to make RL deals. ^^ |

I have nearly a dozen Gibson guitars in SL... But, they're not guitars at all. They're prims. So, if they carry the Gibson name or not, I really don't care. I would LOVE to have a RL Gibson SG and it's fun to have a depiction of one stuck to my avatar, but it's not something I'd put any effort in hunting down or paying for unless it carried a TON of actual first-hand quality to it. Gladly... Gibson guitars are free in SL. (^_^)
I'm more interested in the content of SL being a reflection of the virtual world that it is. While RL references of products and such don't detract from it, I don't see why putting a RL brand name on a prim would make any item more or less desirable. (=_=)y _____________________

Could you maybe create a timewarp object so that when I log into SL and spend hours here, I can still go back to RL I can regain some of that time? In other words, if I spend 4 hours here, but that messed up my RL chore schedule, when I log out, I want 2 of those hours back.
Thanks much for your help. ![]() _____________________

Fairly obvious gap in my opinion: demos, demos, demos.
Demos of skin, hair, and shoes are commonplace now (animations don't technically have demos but you can try them out in the store so that counts), but precious few stores offer demos of clothing .Other than that: prefab demos (yes, footprint is helpful, but being able to rez a demo copy on your plot is just so much better), texture demos (yes, you can see the texture in the store, but I want to see it applied to what I need it for, even if 80% of it is obscured by the word DEMO on it), furniture demos (one store I found had demos of their kitchens as far as footprint was concerned which was extremely handy), etc. Given the negliable cost (L$10/texture) the only reason I can think of that there are more demos of things is that it might reduce sales: if it's a "maybe, maybe not" I'll tend to err on the "maybe not" and you loose a potential sale, if it's "maybe" and it turns out to be bad I'm quite likely to forego buying anything else at the store ever again even if I think it might turn out better than the failed purchase (once bitten, twice shy). |

I could say more about it but if people don't understand that ... The center point of a prim is fixed, but the axes are not...you can select between World, Local, or Attachment coordinate systems. This can be very helpful in positioning prims. _____________________

I need a brain upgrader and brain delagging device...
I also think it would be cool to be able draw and paint in world without having to open my art program but it probably create to much lag painting white streaks over grids in my office area in SL. I personally don't buy much unless it helps me create better. More new improved that was affordable, intuitive and easy to use version something like of Avpainter/3D type application that I could use for painting designs on prims easier would be nice cause it such pain trying to figure out how to match locations on grids in 2d I might buy it. I have thought about more advanced applications but I don't have skills to program it. _____________________

I'm more interested in the content of SL being a reflection of the virtual world that it is. While RL references of products and such don't detract from it, I don't see why putting a RL brand name on a prim would make any item more or less desirable. (=_=)y Brand names became brand names based on quality of workmanship (Cadillac) or popularity (Coca-Cola). This remains true around 100 years after those companies formed, and remains true in virtual worlds. I'll go to Grendel's Children when I want an avvie that is non-human and different (and well constructed, and with great extra features, and very reasonably priced...), or Shiny Things for some high quality shoes, or, yea, Kick The Can for some top notch skins for kids (I did not approach her about doing kid skins simply because Robin was a RL friend, but because I know she does quality work). These and many others are this world's "brand names." Now if some of the top talent from some RL firms came into SL, and made content of a quality (well constructed, full featured, etc.) equal to or better to what is now here *and* at a price point that was also equal to or better, then perhaps they could establish themselves in SL. Simply slapping a logo on some product and expecting it to sell based solely on the name on the product is not the way to do it. Consider American Appearl, Herman Miller, and Armani as great examples of "you're doing it wrong" in action. Likewise, when one exists in SL, you don't necessarily want what a RL brand is selling. IR:, you might enjoy the feel of your Nissan Sentra or Scion xB. In SL, you can have that 59 Cadillac, or a Mach 5, or a car that makes both seem ugly and quaint. You can pilot space ships – why drive a Nissan? Same applies in other businesses: you can wear outfits of fantasy instead of polos and pullovers, shoes more amazing than you'll ever find on the Payless racks, and so on. _____________________

Saab 96, rally prepared, or a Saab Monte Carlo. Don't know why they aren't all over the place in SL, especially as they do so well upside down or rolling over. Would seem a natural for SL. |

Yes, I mean the center point indeed: there where the axis meet. ^_^ Could really work wonders if one could reposition this "meeting place". |
