Works fine if you have the right kit, but that's a big if and it's unfair on people who have been happily (well in Second Life terms) running LL's viewers to suddenly be faced with this.
You have a point about the Nicholaz viewer though, hopefully those who feel aggrieved will discover that rather than leave.
