Hover Text?

And while I am brain picking.... How do folks get the bits of hovering text above them? I don't mean group tags- but just bits of text that sometimes appear in different colors. Thanks

They have an attachment which contains a script that uses llSetText. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetText . If it's changing color, they're using a timer (llSetTimerEvent) with repeated calls to llSetText.

Personally I think the color changing text is kinda annoying.. That and it's a lot more laggy than you'd think, since a text change causes a full object update every time.

OK- changing color is not necessary- I went to that url and while interesting, I find I have no clue what I just read...

I know how to make a box, hit content and say new script... after that it all goes poof! and smoke comes out of my ears...Hmm- interesting script for that...

Amaranthim, if you visit the Forum Hangout in Allana (search "forum cartel hangout" in Places), you will find a pink box on the porch which will give you a free personal hover-text attachment. You can wear the attachment and read its instructions for how to change the text and the color via chat commands.

It's governed by a pretty simple script, which is probably what the information Sindy was directing you to was about, but I have interpreted your question as asking where to get such a device, rather than how to make one.

No laughing going on here - I'm barely a toddler myself when it comes to scripting, and I don't think everyone needs to to know how to do it when there are brilliant and talented folks out there who can do it for us!

But it is useful to develop intuitions about what is easy to script and what is complex, just so you can evaluate the worth of scripted items.

In this case, the script is simple to write and a good beginner project, but there's also a great freebie available so take advantage of it and don't worry about understanding the script unless ya want to!
