Someone launched a Second Life parody site, and Linden Labs said go ahead! I love it! They didn't go all corporate on the guy. I am impressed...

That's cool, but it happened over a year and a half ago.

That was almost 2 years ago..before the Pragmatic Era, and the Trademark announcement. I wonder how accomodating they are now. But that is a funny site.

It's probably not a big deal. It looks like this will be the only place where humor will be forbidden.

Funny enough, it was someone posting that parody site on a forum that led me to Second Life in the first place, as I wanted to know what the joke was about anyways.. :D

Wow.. Not often you see Ginsu Linden posting..

From: Ginsu
..Moreover, Linden Lab objects to any implication that it would employ lawyers incapable of distinguishing such obvious parody. Indeed, any competent attorney is well aware that the outcome of sending a cease-and-desist letter regarding a parody is only to draw more attention to such parody, and to invite public scorn and ridicule of the humor-impaired legal counsel. Linden Lab is well-known for having strict hiring standards, including a requirement for having a sense of humor, from which our lawyers receive no exception.

LOL...

Any other similar parody sites?

I wonder what the response to several hundred similar sites would be now.

I wonder if having a sense of humour extends to the Lindens staffing the Live Chat. Sometimes it does - sometimes there's no way according to the way that they react that they could have ever found anything funny.

The sites Imogen listed aren't really the same sort of thing as the get a first life site.

The get a first life site uses the trademarked eye in hand symbol, modified, and images that are most likely copyrighted by Linden Research specifically to mock Second Life and virtual world users.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9733935-7.html, which seems pretty old to me, makes like of some SL problems but uses real people to do so, not versions of LL trademarked or copyrighted content - except perhaps for the soundtrack, which has the wind noise, typing sound, etc. I'm not sure what the rules on the use of those sounds are.

The wegame Second Life News video doesn't use LL images to attack or insult LL or the use of SL.

The Avatar video doesn't parody Second Life, it uses Second Life in a parody of a song called Rockstar.

Torley's video doesn't parody SL.

The gametrailers video is an attack on SL users but doesn't use any LL corporate trademarked images or sounds so far as I noticed. This one includes the very old and overused image of the extemely obese guy in his underwear sitting at his computer, which I've seen far more times than I ever wanted to see already, so if you think your life would be better by not seeing it again, be forewarned.

The one at http://www.myds.com.au/VideoDetail.aspx?id=894 doesn't parody Second Life so far as I can tell, just uses SL to make the visuals for a music video. It's good, I liked it the best of the bunch. The video song is called "Why don't you get a job?".

The kzero one mocks Microsoft Surface and doesn't involve SL at all.
