Here are my video card specs: EVGA Nvidia 9800 GX2 Nvidia drivers 174.74 ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_174.74_whql.html ) Here is the problem: Every time I run the official SL client or the RC04 client or even the Nicholaz Eye Candy client, within a few minutes the screen freezes up and/or goes completely black. Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit has not crashed, because my Winamp is still playing. I"ve already submitted a bug report to Nvidia. Anyone else hear of this or having the same problem ? TIA for your time. Steve

I'm running Nicholaz's Eye Candy version and haven't crashed once with the those drivers.
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (3006 MHz) Memory: 2048 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/AGP/SSE2
Possibly a Vista issue...?

Those seem to work better, but I'm still crashing per the jira issue above. I'll keep working on it. I also put in a bug report to Nvidia.

Look in Control Panel>>>>>>>>Administrative tools>>>>>Event viewer>>>>>Windows logs>>>>>Apps and systems right after this happens and see if it tells you if there was an event Vista has a method of preventing a complete crash and blue screen, but when that happens the screen will go black a few moments or longer, then usually recover but often the program will have crashed. This is a "Timeout Detection and Recovery issue" (TDR) and is probably what is happening to you. It is related to the drivers themselves---although people will blame Vista or Temperature etc. The same problem was happening with the 8800's until Nivida finally came up with drivers that worked. First try uninstalling the driver. Use a driver clean up tool http://www.drivercleaner.net/ Turn off virus scanner and all security temporarily. Tell Windows Update NOT to automatically install and tell you when it has updates to choose. Check to see if Windows Update is trying to give you a old driver again and "hide it" if it shows. This can happen especially on the beta (uncertified) drivers. Download 174.74 drivers to desktop again. run it as administrator. You can read the NZONE forums and see all the people having the same issue, but keep in mind that there will be much contradictions and misinformation and angry people. ATI people have the same problems. ---When the issue was happening on the 8800's for many months, it was the drivers, and SL's ability to run on that card. You may just have to be patient

The official drivers from nvidia and the companies making cards with nvidia's chipsets are buggy, usually outdated and troublesome... your best bet is to find the 174.93 beta drivers and use them instead. (guru3d is a good place to look)

So far so good, but we'll see Thank you again. on edit: same problem again.. I'll stop posting now unless I find a definite solution.

Do you have the Vista Service Pack 1 installed? it contains some hotfixes for the TDR problems and the graphics cards. Only use the sp1 from Windows Update not the huge file containing multiple languages found on their site. I checked again and you are right there is a 174.53 for Vista and for XP...on different links. So see how it goes. EDIT again Well the site takes you to the Vista Driver 174.74---that was why I was confused after reading this post and see you tried the 174.53 which the site now shows as XP only. Best repeat the process, uninstall and clean it and use the 174.74 for vista again. I know how frustrating it can be, because many went through it for some time with the 8800 series cards. this is what happens when you buy the latest and greatest before they really have good drivers...however the issues requiring cleaning it up after the uninstall and those steps still hold true. Also keep checking for Beta drivers when you go to the Nvida driver page. Are you having this problem in any other games/APPS?

It's definitely a bad combination, Vista and this Nvidia driver. I'm getting the latest copy of XP Pro to run until Microsoft/SL/Nvidia fixes this. UPDATE: found a beta driver on another forum, called 174.93 http://www.xfastest.com/viewthread.php?tid=9359&extra=page%3D1Did a virus and malware scan, came out clean. So far works perfectly *knock on cyber-wood*

I updated yesterday to 169.21 forcewear and I had no problems until today. I figured it was just SL.

I'm also using 169.21 forcewear, with an nVidia 8800 Ultra and Vista-64. It worked OK for a month or so, but last night I had two crashes in the old SL client. I then switched to the latest Release Candidate, and my system immediately became unstable. To fix it, I had to reinstall 169.21.
My question now is: which SL client is "safest" with Vista-64 and this nVidia card and driver?
