This is just a point I wanted to make based on some of the Gambling, Ginko, and Land threads. Think of it as a resident answer to an unasked question.
People keep pushing for LL to stop allowing the exchange of $L for "real money."
Let's say this happens. All $L stays in-world. Thousands of premium members get their weekly stipend. Tens of thousands buy $L to spend. No one has any utilities, taxes, food, or other neccessities in SL. Purchasing is completely voluntary. Tier needs to be paid with real money. The total amount of $L in-world keeps increasing, but doesn't really go anywhere. Landlords stop renting since the $L has no real value. They can't cash it in to pay tier.
Suddenly everyone has $L coming out of their... shoes.

So if they were able to pay tier in $L landlords couldn't get money to pay their tier because they need money to be able to be taken out more than being able to be put in. Perhaps we should be campaining for stopping people cashing in for the good of the Landlords?

Who?? If that ever happened, it would be a real show stopper!!!!! Some people invest real $ into SL, there would be a lot of upset people if they couldn't cash out real $.

The only way to handle tier without people being able to cash out is if landlords allowed you to pay them USD directly which they in turn would pay to LL for tier. My landlord in fact does allow this, but I doubt that it is a universal thing. The drawback to this is that people who earn enough through their businesses to make their tier payments from it would be hosed. Suddenly it would not matter how many thousands of L$ they have from sales, they will still have to pay their landlords in real money, and they can no longer sell any of those L$ to get it. That would really seriously upset the established status quo. Showstopper, I don't know, but unlike many of the other things that people predict the death of SL over, that one would be entirely plausible.

It won't happen, because the content creators are needed to advance the state of the world. An SL with only amateur-beginner content would lose many residents to virtual "worlds" with better looks. The selfishness of the people who would hose everyone and everything in SL, including many established communities, just to get gambling back, is astonishing.
