I am wondering if there is a way to create invisible avatars. You know, make your skin and any default clothing completely invisible at the same time without relying on an invisibility prim or vanish animation.
Or, if there is a way to make my avatar half invisible - like 50% transparent. Any help?

As far as I know, there is no other way to do this. Invisiprims is the only way to be invisible. Their drawback is that they also affect (occlude) other 32 bit textures behind them.

I saw a guy once who was trying to wear a single invisiprim that covered his entire body. At first, all I could see was his prim hair, which really looked silly. But he was standing beside a lake, and with the lake water behind him, the exact shape of the invisiprim was painfully obvious.

there used to be, it was patched.
the vanish animation is pretty effective though when coupled with an invisiprim and a meatball pose.

I was told the Linden's could move about unseen, maybe my leg was pulled. Love June

You can always go somewhere, hover 200 metres up in the sky, disable your camera constraints and swing the camera down to where you want to be. That way nobody sees your name either!

But..........
Vanish Animation ?
Meatball Pose? Vanish animation - There is an animation which moves your avatar a few metres underground so that only the foot shadow remains visible above ground. Meatball pose - There is a certain pose which sort of folds your avatar into a small ball. This is normally used to hide the normal avatar when using a Tiny. I created a "glowing energy ball" avatar using both. It's pretty effective. The only bug is that the vanish anim does not kick in automatically after TPing even though it's active in my ZHAO.

I'd heard the rumor about a passive viewer (no av) that LL can use too. it's possible, but I have no idea if it's true.

You can make everything you have on transparent, but you are always stuck with the system skin.
Skins we buy and wear are textures on the tattoo layer of the system skin. So if you are wearing a 100% alpha texture as a skin, you get the orange smear that is the underlying system skin. That base skin we can do nothing with. We can only cover it up with clothes or tattoos. So if the clothes and tattoos are invisible .... you get the newbie skin.

I replace the Linden Default skin in my "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\character" folder with my own skin textures and the head_color.tga file is alpha'd (the eye lashes). So i wonder what happens if i replace the 3 skin files with blank alpha'd(transparent) tga files. I will try this when i log in later today. I wonder if i will remain a cloud.

hey! I didn't think of that. I just assumed everyone else would see you av with their own local copy ... but once your av is baked with the replaced files THAT is what everyone else sees.
Don't forget to let us know how it turns out.

It does not work. It loads a default texture from somewhere if you replace the default textures with blank alpha textures.

I wonder if I can create a skin using a template that I can modify to make invisible? Like make a transparent skin using Adobe or GIMP, perhaps?

Make a 512x512 image with a alpha/transparent layer, save it. Upload it. Replace your skin tattoo slots with your newly uploaded transparent textures, and you will get an avatar wearing the default skin. I am not so tech savvy as to know how or why this happens, but that is what happens.

It happens because there's no skin to wear on SL (whenever they are used for that purpose), in fact you wear a full body tattoo that covers your (real) skin, if you make it transparent u gonna make a transparent *tattoo* and your skin will be exposed.

except the skin being displayed is the default skin, which is puzzling.

Can anyone send me (in world) or where can I get the "Vanish Animation" to move my nametag away from my Avatars central location (underground?)
I purchased a lovely tiny Avatar last night (more for a laugh than anything) and he looks all cute, but the effect is ruined by a giant great nametag overhead.
Even a friend said it was a shame about the namestag as it spoiled the effect.
I undertand you can move your nametag quite a way away from your avatars centre.
