If someone sends Landmarks, notecards or whatever to one, more or all of your visitors without they know they will get it, is that spamming? I would say that it is spam, but seems the spammer says it is not spamming, but just sending a LM to someone in private, what is allowed by LL.
What would be best to react on such spam? Give such people a warning and eventually a ban after you talked with them? And eventually, would it help if the ppl who recieved the spammed LM's AR a spammer to LL?
Just my thoughts and doubts about how to handle this kind of things since im getting sick of getting unasked LM's and notecards all the time. And then i am not talking about the greeterspams, but just visitors spamming other visitors.

It's spam. End of story. Tell them to stop and ban them if they don't. AR them. Get others to AR them.
The world and SL is afflicted by spiritual pygmies. Left unchecked, this LM and Note spamming will continue to grow - just as email spam grew.
There is no difference in principle between this and email spam.

From: Community Standards 6 Disturbing the Peace Every Resident has a right to live their Second Life. Disrupting scheduled events, repeated transmission of undesired advertising content, the use of repetitive sounds, following or self-spawning items, or other objects that intentionally slow server performance or inhibit another Resident's ability to enjoy Second Life are examples of Disturbing the Peace. I agree with Sling, tell them to quit and if they don't, AR and ban.

the other day i kept receiving items and landmarks and notes from one individual...i declined all of them. Eventually after the 6th thing..i looked them up and messaged them to ask WHY? I dont know them...and as far as i could see id not visited anything to do with them, so was curious why theyd chosen me.
The person was quite miffed that i wasnt accepting her stuff..and said "youve self identified yourself as a model in the classifieds...so deal with it"
I was momentarily speechless lol
However..i dont think that having a classified advertising myself as a freelance model qualifies me as "openseason" to having this type of invasion of spam...does it? I DID state that I WOULD AR her for spamming...and even then she wouldnt have it..
I agree with the above sentiments, spam is going to get a a lot worse, specially with what ive heard about group *joiners*, paid to get a certain amount of people to join a group.
ugh

ugh Is there any chance that the notecard was trying to offer you a modelling job? Their response seems really out of character for your typical spammer. If you are advertising services, you should expect people to send you notecards with offers or questions.

It's bothersome. It's just like when you enter a shop and you're greeted by some floating robot who constantly follows you around the shop giving you notecards.

Nope...no offers of work...and i was surprised that even though i was in busy mode and it said id *declined* the notes, they were in my inventory anyway. There were full of LM's to clubs. In my classified, i specify that Its easy to contact me by im to discuss...i dont feel i should expect notes or items from anyone randomly, especially not in this magnitude, 6 things in 10 minutes!!! . i belong to several groups that i do accept notes and notices from for work. AND i checked this chick out...she was nothin to do with a store, fashion, model agency, she was not in any groups that would make me feel she had anything to offer in the way of work and was only 6 weeks old. smacks to me of newbie making cash by spamming.

Ya know...I wondered about spamming of late, myself. I own a biker roadhouse and was on another biker sim, just talking to people...some in IM. I did mention to a few IN IM about an event we were having soon, that they had expressed interest in. I didn't give any specifics in IM and didn't talk about it at all in open chat. I only gave info in IM once I was asked about it. Well, I am not sure how the management found out I gave info to a few people (actually like 5 people who ASKED for the info in IM), but I was given a warning about spamming and if I didn't stop, I would be banned. I honestly didn't realize that was considered spamming, and didn't go to that sim specifically to talk about it. But in my IM conversations I did mention I owned another place. Is this really spamming? Needless to say, I haven't talked to anyone there about any upcoming events since then.

Personally, if I know of locations, stores, or events that I enjoy that would entertain people, I don't hesitate with a recommendation. It sounds as though you ran across someone who doesn't understand one of the basics of social networking. Word of mouth among a niche audience is critical for continued support of that niche, and valuable for all participating locations. An event manager who scrounges for paying customers and considers them their exclusive property is stupidly parochial. I suggest no longer attending events at that location. You scratch my back...

-Blu- If the people asked for the info then it is no longer spam. Ignore the others paranoia, it wasnt spam

In general, I agree, Snark. What I consider to be spamming is, when I go to one of my favorite stores to shop and am suddenly inundated by notecards and/or LM to other stores or malls.
What happened to Blu is, I think, a bit over the top but, it doesn't take much for someone to feel like you are trying to steal customers.

When I receive something unsolicited from someone I haven't friended, I look them up and often start with: "Um... do I know you?" (getting an evasive answer if any at all) I follow with: "What made you think I would have ANY interest in (whatever it was offered)?" (which is followed usually with the obligatory "Well just ignore it if you're not interested!" "Ignoring people is rude. So is interrupting people unnecessarily with spam." (which is followed with denials, it's not spam no no no!) "You sent promotional/invitational stuff to me without my having asked for it. It is spam, which makes you a spammer and involiation of the ToS&CS, and reportable, and ban-able. I suggest you find some other method to advertise before it gets you into more serious trouble." (by which time they've usually given up talking to me, realizing I'm just distracting them from sending more spam. )

It doesn't matter if you're sitting in the WA or attending a private event, uninvited popups (inventory items, friend invites...) are a waste of time. References during or accompanying an engaging conversation are a natural progression and an important step in networking. I don't mind an old friend who's started up an insurance agency giving me his card. I do mind being astroturfed while browsing a bookstore! The various estate/tenant/banlist threads cover the most overtly territorial behavior quite well. Not sure how I would react in those threads as a tenant. In a pissing contest between property owners it's the renter who ends up soaking wet.

*ponders this* I think the next time I get a unwanted note card, I'm going to send them a picture of Spam. I think if every person did this, maybe the idiots would get an idea of what spam is?
