A Friend of mine claimed she wanted to come to SL to spend time with me since she and I no longer live near one another irl.. She hadn't spoke anymore about it in a while but the other night she claimed she had tried and it wouldn't work for her because supposedly SL doesnt support Comcast users or the other way arounds.(somthing like that)..But essentially she claimed no one using comcast as isp could get on SL.. Is there any truth to this ????? Thank you in advance: )

Except when Comcast’s service was screwed up, which was once every couple of months. |

Comcast here. (^_^)
I had a bit of trouble while they were replacing some splitters over the last summer in order to eventually speed up service this summer (which did happen.. 6Mbps/2Mbps now) but other than that; my cable internet has been fast, solid uptime, and fine with SL. (^_^)y _____________________

when I was in Denver I used comcast without issue...
that said, some sort of local misconfiguration or port blocking may be going on, is which case your friend would need to contact them. _____________________

We have comcast.....always have......and a cable connection is probably arguably the fastest and best you can use with SL......soooo...not entirely sure what your friend is talking about.
If your friend is having problems with connecting to SL.....it's very doubtful that it has anything to do with her internet with comcast. It could be a firewall issue...but if she can connect to the internet, she can get in SL. Concast doesn't filter what we use our internet for. ![]() _____________________

In short, Ballistic, your friend either needs to check her router, firewall and port configurations, or find another excuse as to why she can't join SL

well there has been a lot of talk around comcast doing traffic shaping on some protocols, but it didn't apply to SL so far.

Sounds like she doesn't want to play SL with you... I have been using Comcast for years and never had a problem using SL with it. Something is either wrong on her end or it is a courtesy excuse to say she doesn't want to play. Or maybe she already has a bunch of alts playing you in SL already.

Haven't had a problem using Comcast. I had a completely unmemorable company briefly, and it was a nightmare of continual outages. I think tComcast's McAfee Security stuff clashes with SL somehow though.

http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2007/10/comcast-shooting-itself-in-the-foot-with-traffic-shaping-explanations.ars
"Comcast is, in effect, impersonating the busy signal and preventing the phone at the other end from ringing by issuing TCP reset packets to both ends of a connection. " Altho they prolly don't do a thing on the sl protocol, it's still an isp i wouldn't like to deal with... If you can get a better isp than Comcast (a more honest one) expressing your opinion with your wallet always work. _____________________

they already use shaping on things like torrents and other high bandwidth apps have been hit in the past, mostly due to the local office either being overzealous or incompetent in applying it.... that's why I mentioned misconfiguration... if the same set up of computer and router worked in one place, it's very likely that it's the local branch in the new place causing the issue.

Also using Comcast with SL. I would say with "no problems." but it's still Comcast. Still, works most of the time.

Maybe tell your friend that Comcast works for a LOT of people, but in some areas there are problems with SL, problems that can be worked out. Then, if she needs help dealing with Comcast, we can give you advice on what she should say to them.
But if she doesn't follow up, then SL is prolly a form of media she'd prefer not to bother with. In which case you should make an effort to keep her as a friend, because it's nice to have a few sane friends. ![]() |

Comcast here as well. No problems, for the most part.
I will qualify this a bit further: I'd not had any problems since first joining SL almost three years ago, except a few months ago. I was having massive problems and kept muttering under breath about comcast. Secondlife wasn't the only site I had problems with. I'd seen someplace, (perhaps here) that sometimes people who use a LOT of bandwidth get capped. I looked this up in Comcast's info, and in a very buried spot it did mention briefly about this. Finally, in total frustration over connection issues, (trying to upload a video to blip.tv), I called Comcast and dealt with a tech. It turned out that our equipment was the problem although it wasn't readily apparent to us. I dont remember whether router or modem atm. I didn't deal with that aspect, Eli did. The tech was very helpful telling us about what he was seeing on our account. From their end, it was obvious. We swapped out equipment, and have had no problems since then. _____________________
