I pretty sure their is no one who can show you 'all the features' of SL and you really don't want to know them all ;) . And I pretty sure you don't want to hang out with me, however I'll be more than happy to answer any questions anytime.

Just go to Hanja on the busy hours.

There should be a mentor or helper there.

Sweeney, welcome to SL :)

Just ask away here in the forum. You'll find a bunch of very helpful people here. I learned most of what I know of SL from following discussions here.

Sometimes things get a bit out of hand, but it's all good. :o

How about skin, hair and clothes? Do you already have all you need? Do we need to start a shopping tour to get you settled in? ;)

Help Island Public is a good place to find mentors, though it can be a bit of a zoo there. There should be a landmark to there in your inventory, under Library->Landmarks.

Just show up in the central area and ask in chat if there's a mentor that's got some time to help walk you though things. Probably best to ask if they can move away from the central area (or maybe to the region to the N, which is usually quiet) so it's easier to chat with them. Rince & repeat as often as you want.

edit: and as for finding people to hang out with, I encourage you to check out as many places as you can - SL is hugely diverse. You'll find places that are complete turn offs. You'll find places that are nice. You'll find places that you absolutely love. I know lots of people who only hang out in 1-2 places because they have no idea how much is out there so explore as much as you want and don't limit yourself, unless you want to. Also, don't be shy about saying howdy when you walk into a place - and don't be offended if nobody answers for a minute as it's more likely that they're AFK or in IMs than that they're snobs.

Hi Sweeney, and welcome to SL and the forums!

Inworld, there's a forum hangout - here's the location:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Allana/165/40/34

There's usually someone around, and folks are more than happy to answer questions and show you around. There's also a shelf on the deck outside with lots of useful freebies. :)

I'll look you up when I'm inworld this evening.

The Forum Hangout that Maureen mentioned is a good spot. You really can't go too far wrong there. :)

But if you haven't found it yet, also be sure to visit NCI. There are always people there giving advice. There are freebie boards, and tutorial boards, and such as well.

It is where I got my start, and am forever thankful for it.

Another newbie-friendly hangout is The Shelter. Again more freebies. And the crowd there tends to be newer people generally socializing.

Pop over to http://slurl.com/secondlife/Silent%20Sparrow , turn to the left and walk through the archway. There will be a blue bird with a feathery tail there, and near the bird there will be a box new users can click to get a set of freebies. One of the freebies, if I recall correctly, is a "Sweeney Todd" outfit. You might appreciate that. :)

Try out NCI. You'll find the main crowd in the Kuula sim and a great tutorial in Oxbridge University. Tons of helpers around. And classes & events to help you learn what you want to know. (^_^)

Do a search in the Events tab inworld for "NCI" to see our current roster of events/classes. (^_^)y

The Friday night beach party at 8pm SLT is a great way to get the simplest questions out of the way while enjoying the music and company. (^_^)

The Saturday night Q&A event, starting 6:30pm SLT is a complete open forum for any and all new resident questions. (^_^)

Finally... This is the Resident Answers forum. Feel free to search for your questions here or start threads if you can't find any information. (^_^)

That's called making friends where I come from, geeks call it social networking. But whatever you call it, you just have to get out into the world and meet people try things and ask questions. You'll make mistakes, and meet disagreeable people sometimes, but that's all part of SL. ake the good suggestion offered here so far and visit the places mentioned.

Hi, Sweeney! All the folks here are friendly and helpful and have given you some great suggestions. I'm a Second Life Mentor, and will be glad to add my bit to getting you up to speed. IM me any time, or send email with specific questions to lindalkidd@verizon.net.

I'm a bit out of pocket the next few days though, so I might be slower to respond than usual.
