There are groups you can chat in in Windows Live Messenger - if there was one called SLchat, for example, you can join a group and chat with other group members by messaging [email]SLchat@msn.com[/email].

Does anyone know of any such IM groups related to SL?

It wouldn't have to be an MSN/WLM group, any public SL group using an IM system with a web based client would serve the purpose.
