How do you stop an unwanted daily product upgrade without losing the product?

I have a product that is scripted and wearable. (I'd rather not discuss the details, but let's just say it matches). I like it and have no problems with it.
They upgraded it to a new design and sent the upgrade out. I IM'ed the creator and politely suggested that the old one was better. The creator was very nice, and even asked my advice on changing the upgrade design, but even after those changes I still just like the old one better. Actually I don't even like the new version at all. Now every single day I, and my alts, get the upgrade delivery when I log in, with a message that says to upgrade to the new version to stop getting the delivery. My choices are "decline" and "mute." One of my alts did actually upgrade, and then deleted it and used the old one again, and still gets the message every day.
Decline is obviously not working. Will "mute" mute the creator? I'd rather not do that. Maybe I should just IM them and ask to be taken off the list or something.
But my greater concern is: how would this content creator know whether anyone upgraded or not? Is the product in communication with the creator? And just for my own curiosity, why would they care if people used a free upgrade or not?

It's easy enough to know who upgrades. If the upgrade isn't sent out by the creator personally, the script that does it can know exactly who it's dealing with at the time. Also, any script can pass information to whoever it is scripted to pass it to.
I'd ask to be removed from the upgrades list.

I'm not sure how the creator has things set up, but it's popular to use an "update server" -- the item "calls" the update server and sees if there's a new version. There's no "list" to be removed from.
In this case, the only way to get this to stop is to remove the update check script. However, if the creator has integrated the updating into another script, there's no way to stop the updates without losing product functionality.
Best thing is to talk to the creator about it.

Couldn't an update server have a list of "do not upgrade" people?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Couldn't an update server have a list of "do not upgrade" people? The HippoVend (which I use) doesn't. I keep the update script separate, so can optionally be deleted.

My upgrade script has an option to accept or decline a particular update (with the proviso that, if one declines the updating, one will never receive any further updating). In fact it is completely opt-in, explains the exact terms, and one has to click buttons to get updates at all.
If one mutes the object which is giving the item, one will not receive any further inventory offers from it. It will not mute the creator as far as I am aware. I would try to encourage the creator to offer an opt-out though.

I think I know what it is .... hehe. I remember my alt wore the older version accidentally and got the upgrade request again and then got another copy of the new one. You would definitely need to talk to the creator. Maybe they can get you one that has the version check disabled. Those are no transfer I think so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I'd click mute, and then open View > Mute List and see if you can tell whether it muted the object, or the owner

Ordinal & Day.. the new "Accept/Decline/Mute" dialog when you get an inventory offer.. that mute button mutes the owner of the giving object, not the giving object. (((Another brilliant planning decision from the Mind of Linden Labs)))
(happens on the order of once per week, in my shop.. new users muting my notecard giver, then mysteriously not getting things they paid for, then never hearing my responses to their complaints, etc.)
To the OP.. check the contents of the object. See if you can see a script called "Updater script" or something. If there is one, try removing that script, and see if this helps.

Thanks for all the good info.
Yes, I also found out that muting the update tried to mute the person, not the object.
I IMed the creator before I saw all these answers here, and she also told me about removing the updater script. I'm glad it wasn't necessary to mute her.
So on a related note, Winter: as a shopper I pretty much detest automated notecard and landmark-givers. I don't mute them, but I always decline them. I wonder if your store would just be better off without it? I have voluntary notecard and landmark givers at teleport points and satellite offices, and they definitely get used. That way it's also easier to tell which locations and which items are generating the most interest.

That way it's also easier to tell which locations and which items are generating the most interest. Glad you got your deal sorted out. As to my store, I don't use an automated giver. However there are some panels on my sales display, that when you touch them, give you a notecard. An example is: the panel says "French" (in french). Click it, and you get the french language version of the information notecard, and a landmark for the store. If you clicked the vendor's main panel, it used to send you a notecard also (I removed this) One of several things is happening. 1. I thought people might be getting the notecard from the vendor, and being surprised (not expecting one) so they would mute what they perceived as an unsolicited give. I removed this notecard from my vendor, but the problem continues. 2. It's possible that people are clicking a button, and reciving the note, and when the second landmark comes in, they mute it. I really should have given as a folder with these givers.. and I may convert to this process in the future, however I think embedding the landmark INTO the notecard is probably the more professional way to proceed. 3. People are playing with the clickable things.. or are accidentallu clicking, and really don't want the notes.. so they are muting. 4. People still have "auto open" active for notes and soforth. Therefor, regardless of whether they click accept/decline or mute, they stiill "See" the note. 5. People hate me. (I'm sure this is true for some.. but the number of people involved, and their newness to SL, suggests that either there's a widespread "Anti-Winter" campaign going on in the orientation islands, or else something else is to blame. -- I have never given an unsolicited item in this store. I have a door greeter which doesn't even give a landmark, it just says one line in chat, "we're moving!" and a "secondlife://" url, which would forward people to our new location (if they chose to click it). The problem really stems (I beleive) from LL's short-sighted implementation of this mute button. It was instituted during a time when inventory offers were being used as a greifing tool. People were using weapons to spam thousands of image offers per minute at their victim. At the time, "mute person giving me these items" was a valuable defense. But I think is some other languages, "Mute" doesn't imply "Silence Forever and never ever be able to talk to this person again".. but may be closer to "ignore" and is being mistaken for "ignore this dialog" or "don't warn me again"

Would anyone know why deleting the updater script doesn't work? That is, it lets me delete it, but then it is immediately back the next time I pull up the contents. I'm still getting the new package every day.
By the way, the mute function messed up for me also, Winter: 2 days ago a tenant couldn't hear me because she muted the notecard from her rental box.
