I am working on installing flight controls into a large build. The script instructions say a copy of the script must be inserted into all linked sets. It then says that a copy of the script must be placed into the pilots seat and that the pilots seat must be a child prim.
What is a child prim?
In SL nomenclature, an Object is a Linked Set of one or more Prims (or Primatives). One of the prims is considered to be the Root Prim and all the rest are considered to be Child Prims.
An exercise:
1. Rez three cubes:
......a. Go somewhere you can build like a sandbox.
......b. Click the Build button at the bottom of the screen.
......c. Click the ground and watch a cube appear.
......d. On the edit window, at the top, there will be five icons. The middle one will now be highlighted to indicate you are in edit mode. Click the one to the right that looks like a magic wand. This will put you back in create mode.
......e. Click the ground again to make another cube.
......f. Go back to create mode.
......g. Click the ground again to make the third cube.
......h. You will now be in edit mode with the last rezzed cube selected.
2. Select the other two cubes.
......a. Hold down the Shift key and left click one of the other cubes.
......b. Do the same thing for the third cube.
......c. You will now have all three cubes selected at the same time. Notice that each one has a yellow glow around it.
3. Link the three cubes together.
......a. From the Tools menu select Link. Alternatively, press CTRL-L.
......b. You now have one object made of three prims.
Notice that the glow surrounding the cubes has changed. Two of the prims now have a bluish glow around them. Those are the child prims. The third still has a yellow glow. That's the last prim you selected just before linking and is the root prim.
Now that you've done all that, you should be able to edit any object and tell which prims are the child prims and which one is the root prim.
