Teleport friend in, but she stays a "cloud" -what does this mean?

I can get her profile, but she does not render fully, even after 4-5 minutes

It usually means that one or the other of you has kind of a crummy network connection.

Sometimes if the person who appears as a cloud goes into Edit Appearance mode for a moment and then exits, it can force the avatar to load properly for others.

Is there a way to interfere intentionally with a teleport that might cause this?

Not that I've ever heard of...

It could also be that the region is unhappy or getting weird. A rebake usually makes the cloud go away. Either, like Carter says, going into edit appearance or by doing ctrl-alt-r.

Sorry, newbie here: Rebake, edit appearance?

Can I edit *her* appearance?

No - those are things she has to do.

Edit menu (at top of screen) and select Appearance

or

Shift+Ctrl+Alt+d will give the Advanced menu - under that, go down to Character and in that menu go to the bottom for Rebake (the shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+r).

Also, SOMETIMES, YOU can change your active group and then the cloud will SOMETIMES rez.

But the cloud is already rezzed - he wants the avatar to rez.

She can also right-click on herself and choose Appearance out of the pie menu. She won't have to make any changes; just go into this mode and then exit it, and with any luck her avatar will load properly on your screen.

I've heard this before but I have never once seen it actually work.

LittleMe has good info above.

Sorry, newbie here: Rebake, edit appearance?

The way skins & non-prim clothes work in SL is that the sim sorta gives all that stuff to your computer, which then "bakes" all that stuff down into a single image. Your computer then uploads that single image back to the sim and the sim passes it out to other people that can see you.

This is waaaaay faster, graphics-wise, than having everybody constantly drawing all the individual bits that make up your looks but if anything goes wrong with this process, SL ends up not knowing what you look like and you get to be a cloud or have big chunks of you be a boring gray.

This is also why people who look like a cloud to everybody else frequently see themselves looking just fine - the baking process worked on their local PC but something went wrong with the rest of the process.

See also https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2006/09/18/getting-technical-baked-avatar-textures.

Anyway, when somebody says "rebake" they're talking about forcing SL to redo this whole process.

If you're using Flight Feather, click on the feather and click "Deruth" on the dialog.

Make sure you're outside, first, though.

That 'change group' thing is the only way I can get folks to fully rez from a cloud when I relog at the Hangout after crashing there.

Cool, nice to know it works sometimes. I've personally never seen it work at the Hangout or anywhere else - it's one of those things people say to do, so it's good to have some confirmation that it sometimes has an effect.

Ask your friend if she has a menu called 'Advanced' at the top of her screen, up next to File Edit View. If she doesn't, have her press ctrl-alt-d to enable it.

Once she gets the Advanced menu, have her click that, then Character then Rebake Textures. It may take a minute to work but this is the most reliable way to de-clould yourself.

but if the rebake way doesn't work, then from the Advanced menu select debug settings, then select "RenderUnloadedAvatar", change False to True and the cloud should become a proper avatar.

The problem with that is that it only works for those who have changed that setting. Everyone else still sees a cloud - that's most people. Also, the av is ruthed.
