Misrouted IMs

At least once a day, sometimes several times a day...and it seems to worse with some people than with others.....I get a message in an IM window that says "Avatar Name is typing..." and after 2 or 3 minutes it doesn't go away. When I ask the other person, they claim not to be typing. But 9 times out of time, the next time I log on, I get a "Saved IM" that coincided with the "is typing..." thing. I have gotten to where I ask a lot of times, "This is the last thing I got from you. Did I miss anything?" Usually I did.

So, my questions are...does this happen to everybody? Is it a known issue? Are they fixing it? I don't remember it always happening. It's like it just started a few months ago. Is there something I can do to mitigate it? It can be very annoying, and several times people think I am being rude to them because I didn't respond to some IM I never got.

Actually, today when I signed in, I got an offline message from a friend. It also stated they were typing, but when I replied, the standard offline auto-reply popped up.

Yep - I've noticed this a lot more lately.. New and improved.

It has to do with this "joe is offline, joe is online" then you IM them and "joe is offline" thing. And sometimes you get a "joe is offline" when you know they're online. And sometimes you don't even get told, the IM just never makes it to the destination.

If you have IMs to emails turned on, those IMs that fall out of the conversation will show up in your email... since I leave email cheking every 10 minutes, a lost email isn't lost for too long.

Had that problem off and on for at least a year now, but you are right, it's been worse again these last few weeks. Bloody annoying.

I have been seeing it a lot lately too.

The ghost typing has been going on ever since I have been in SL. It broke up a relationship of mine one time. Since she "Knew, just knew" I was typing to other people when I was with her.

The presence server has been acting up for a while as well. It always seems to hit one person on my friends list and not others. Her first message to me nearly always goes to email.

This happens to me a lot, too, and more frequently of late.

It's got to the point that if my IM window says "....is typing" for more than about 30 seconds, I'll interject some neutral comment or emote to see if they really ARE typing.

If they are NOT, then the message will stay on screen, just moving down a line under my new entry.

If they actually start typing, it will go away and then start up again when they really DO start a reply.

It's happened to me since I started SL. It happens a lot more frequently if I'm TPing during the conversation. Almost never if I'm just sitting in one spot the entire time.

IMs received during TPs have always gone to email for me.
