Help needed

I bought a notecard/LM giver script almost a year ago and had been using it in my store with no trouble until recently. Then out of nowhere this thing is spamming random people who have touched it, capping their IM's and filling up their email accounts. Alot of people are very understandably upset. I have deleted all the scripts and the contents of the posters, hoping this will help, and have abuse reported the maker of the script. But in all the time I have been a resident I have never recieved anything other than the standard abuse report reply. How many reports does it take before something is done? and in the meantime is there anything I can do to stop this?

If you have deleted the scripts from the object and people are still getting spammed, it may not be the object you think it is..

Also, the script writer that made the object may not have been a jerk - if it's been working for a year, it's more likely that the script went buggy and freaked out. Just IMO, this is cause to not buy more stuff from them and possibly worthy of sending them a note - it's not really AR material.

It may not be the device you have but someone else's like person above said.
Have you checked to see if their is someone else's scripted device on your land?

It started at a store I rent, spamming the owner, since then other people have come forward who have only been to my main store, and sent me screenshots of the spam. I really am at my witts end with it. I have scripts disabled at the mainstore and I am the only one who has any prims there.

Is it still happening?
If so its one of those griever boxes outside of the land you own most likely.

Did somebody get an email about the spam? If so, it should have the objects name and its location in the email. If you need help finding the object (or making sure it's what you think it is) post that info here and somebody will probably come by to take a look.

It still sounds to me like you're looking at the wrong object. That or maybe it's made from multiple prims and the script isn't in the root prim..

Hi Ashia. We need a little more info, for example.

1. is it spamming by giving the same notecards/LM the object initially had? If so, this is probably just a bug in the script ... perhaps it has a small memory leak?

2. Is the script giving script errors?

3. Is it spamming all the time? If so, one of us can probably go look at it, figure out what object it is, and whether the script is borked.

4. Have you tried resetting the script? Or have you deleted all of them? (Resetting a script does more than just deleting and re-rezzing the object)

That sounds like the most logical idea to me.

There has been major outbreak of these devices and I was even im-ed bit back ago about screaming box by neighbor but it wasn't on my land so there was nothing I could do.

If they are getting IMs to their email, those emails will include the owner and the exact location of the object. Ask somebody to tell you what those are.

If that's confusing, the object name and its coordinates are in the URL.

yea ive been sent screenshots of the the spam by people so it's def what I think it is. So i should reset not delete? Sorry I know less than zero about scripting!

Am I right in thinking people's IMs are being capped with the same LMs and Notices the script was supposed to give on touch?

If so, yes, try resetting the script. It probably ran out of memory and went berserk.

If not, if it's random spam, then maybe it's some other, malicious, object.

kewl. then edit the object it's in, and choose from the menu on top of the screen, "Tools/reset scripts in selected objects" (or something very like that).

Or, perhaps you can reset the script in the edit dialog/contents too. Depending on permissions.

Don't go by the screenshots.. Really..

If somebody gets an email from an object, the email will contain the name of the object and its location. Get that info from somebody who is being spammed and post it here..

Bummer!!! if you're comfortable doing it, post the location and one of us will stop by when we're able?

First, if you can't view the contents of the script, there are freebie notecard-giver scripts which you could use instead. A notecard/landmark-giver is a fairly basic script.

Second, I've seen "giver"-type scripts spam in the past, and a script reset usually fixes the problem. From what I recall, it happens if the scripter used a touch() event, rather than a touch_start() event. And it might be caused by lag or a hiccup... the avatar touches, and the script gets the touch message... but when the avatar lets go of the mouse button, a packet is lost and the server/script doesn't know the avatar is no longer touching the object... putting the script into a loop.

Is there anything you can do to stop this? Yes, take the object into your inventory and don't use it. Get a landmark/notegiver script from the scripting forum.
