daft I know......... but it's kinda bugging me....so I am bound to get a better perspective on this, from the forum folks on here......I have got talking to a 'girl', over the last few weeks who's heavily into role play. Obsidian and Toxian City stuff. Now I don't claim to understand the rp for being a 'demon', nor do I understand why she sits in a little dark box of an appartment waiting for werewolves and creatures of the night to burst through her door to beat her up. This includes marking her body and forced tattooing. I find it really uncomfortable being there and watch the door constantly. Last night thankfully there was no rp'ing going on and they restarted the sim, so I didn't feel bad about leaving. She looked so forlorn and down at heel and although I know it's rp, I actually felt sorry for her. But this is her bag, it's what she likes to do and i make no negative comments. It's probably something to do with her rl, but again that's her business. Can anyone give me some measure of perspective on this, so at least I can understand? I certainly don't want to be in that room when the inevitable happens, especially without my boots on!

It is Role Play.
Do not make the mistake of trying to understand her psychology in regards to "why" she does this particular RP and simply accept that she likes it.
It could be that her tastes are just too dark for you or beyond your ability to understand. I would strongly suggest you ask her "what exactly do you like about this type of RP?". She may give you an answer that you can understand and perhaps even identify with to some degree.

Now... Imagine watching a girl in a box, not unlike what the OP described but outside the RP context. Capable of getting out but unable due to the strictest fear that something could go very very wrong. With the only thing left to do is wait for the next blogger to come around with their own blend of "forced tattooing"...
Then, you'd understand how most of my friends feel...

http://www.xeromag.com/fvbdniceguy.htmlThe short answer is because it gets her off. There have been a lot books written about S&M and if you want to know more, just ask. But for your sake and your friend's sake, just acept that this is who she is. Do not try and fix her, because she is not broken. Some people like vanilla ice cream, others like rocky road; and the flavors of ice cream run way, way, waaayyyy past that. Just like going to a scary movie, your friend enjoys the rush of being frightened and she has found a safe way to enjoy it.

Why all this stuff about accept her as she is..?
Of course try and change her, in as passive aggressive a way as possible.. or if you're a man .. just straight out bully her.
Ok, it will be pretty poor behaviour and you will be disrespecting her and using her to shore up your own inadequacies..
But by all accounts she quite likes it and as the old fella said..
"And all men kill the thing they love, By all let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword! "
If all else fails, dress up as a werewolf yourself and go a calling.. you never know..

What you have seen is Second Life 1.0 The pre-Kingdon era. Fortunately still alive at some locations and in some passionate people as you have seen. To give you a measure of perspective: be happy about it, because this is "her world and her imagination" and it is what the slogan of SL was about.

My imaging of what is going on is this -
Box-girl logs in. Sits in her box.
Alt-of-box-girl logs in and is a master builder creating wonderful scripts/clothes/hair/animations that she's selling for a ton on XStreet.
Or
Driver-of-box-girl kicks back, has a drink and puts on BTVS dvd.
THEN
When evil-monster-thing appears to ravage her.. she stops building, pauses Buffy and goes at it like a bunny on crack.
Works for me.

From: TundraFire Nightfire What's with all the man bashing lately? I do not think that counts as man bashing. I can see that as being a poetic look at mankind more than just the male sex alone. However, if you know any men that need a good bashing (or just a flogging) let me know

1 possible reason
09-08-2009 19:58
In response to the OP.
Perhaps this person does it because they have full control in RL in some fashion. Either an executive, a business owner, or some type of job or role where they are the one who is fully in charge. They could be using SL as a way to strip themselves of that responsibility and relax by letting others fully take control. I'm sure after a full day of being the one to tell everyone what to do, what to make, how to do things, etc etc it would be a relief in some way to just let others take the reins. The not having any control over what happens may be what they're wanting and seeking.
Its not something people should step in and try and change in my view. People should be allowed to role play how they want, within reason of course. Sometimes the reasons people role play the way they do is much simpler than those on the outside looking in can imagine. Just because the person is letting someone break in and beat them, doesn't mean its a reflection of how their RL is.

Some people just enjoy the feeling of adrenaline more than others, in whatever venue, be it books, film, sports, games, sex or...
Your friend may get an adrenaline rush from violent RP. There is plenty of vamp/werewolf RP in SL, so if that's the case, she's not alone.
Or perhaps she just enjoys acting; many people enjoy the challenge of taking on a role, the farther from their own character the better. If everyone in a RP played a "hero" or a "villain", then the storyline would be flat and uninteresting. All kinds of characters are needed to fill out a story.
You could invite her to hang out outside of the RP environment if it makes you uncomfortable.

Dog, its just harmless SL fantasy, her way of escape and obviously a turn on. She prolly has a alt who's a nun, most of us have different sides to thier personality, and SL is a perfect place to let them run free. Dont take it to heart so much...if u were into the same kind of RP u would understand where she's at...not that i enjoy werewolves much..although the occasional sexy vamp or dragon is a little hot, lols

I wasn't guarding the door i was just cacking myself, in case my back was to it when some great big hairy beast came roaring through and tattooed my ass. I don't want to change her and of course it's her thing, I don't have to understand, nor do I have to be involved. Yes she's prolly got rl 'things' going on insomuch that sl offers her some form of release. I have never been into WOW or any of the other rp games, that people get involved in. I suppose I was just trying to get some perspective that's all, but then like many of the respondees said, 'why try to understand?'. You're all right of course - I don't need to, nor do I want to change her, so a friend is all I am going to be. And since there is no perspective to be gained - End of.................
