We all know that the main grid is called Agni, and the beta grid is called Aditi, and Vaak is used by the Gridnauts to teleport to Opensim, but what about all the others in that drop-down list on the log-in page of the client (all named after Hindu gods):
Durga
Soma
Vedic
Ganga
Uma
Shakti
Mohini
Yami
Nandi
Mitra
Radha
Ravi
Aruna
Damballah
Bharati
Chandra
Danu
Parvati
Skanda
Anyone any ideas what these grids are? Has anyone been to any of them? What is the point of them being listed?

I was told they belong to invidividual Lindens, for personal development. Usually running on a computer at their desk. Sort of the precursor to the personal sim.

Was Aditi ever the "main grid"? I've been puzzled when seeing parcels that appear to me someone's abandoned home or store, last time I logged in I ended up on a sim called Purple that seemed very different from the parts I usually find myself at.

LL used to copy over the whole grid to the beta grid. But once the grid started getting too big, they just copied over some of the original mainalnd. Now, they pretty much halted even that. They will copy over inventory, and select regions by special request only. |

Ah, thanks. So one could have a private home on the main grid and find a replicate of it on the beta grid? Sounds kinda eerie.  |

Sounds kinda eerie. yeah, it can be, espeically when you find very crowded places on the main grid that are deserted on the beta grid. Like the time they had Midian City over there. I never really explored it becasue it's always so crowded and laggy. but on the beta grid, I could get a good look.  |

I got into Ganga once when it first become available. it was only about 30 sims, most direct copies from the main grid I assume.
My inventory, groups & friends lists were backdated about 12 months, there were some cool builds a couple of AFK Lindens. Tere was an Ahern, some copies of a few main grid businesses, for testing I presume.
I was the only AV there,couldn't find any where to build but I did rez a vehicle and cruise around a bit.

Most of those grids do not actually have any servers running. Some are up only for a few minutes when some linden decides they need it running.
Most don't have a capacity of more then 20 users at a time, and are just run on a single off the shelf PC.
Agni is the only large scale grid besides the main grid.
