I seem to be suffering from Anisotropy

Been messing around with my graphics prefs and SL is looking increasingly amazing. The new anti-aliasing feature rocks. 2x is good, 4x is great, 8 and 16x I can't really see much difference from 4x except the visible frame update as it flickers from frame to frame. So 4x works for me - the de-jaggedyness of the avies makes a big difference. I have all the other settings ramped up to max except draw distance (256m) and the anti-aliasing is the glorious icing on the cake :)

I still don't get the anisotropic filtering thing though... What the * is anisotropic filtering anyway??? And why do I need it? I read the wikipedia article on it and it's so technical that only a 3d artist would understand it.

Anisotropic Filtering basically makes textures look sharper and clearer, particularly when viewing them from an angle other than straight on.

Thanks :)

I thought it was something like that but the wiki article was awash with mipmaps and other gibberish

Cures are available in ointment or suppository form.

I keep giggling whenever I read mipmaps....it's just such a funny word....

All I need to know is that Torley (bless his cotton socks) reviewed it in his recent graphics vidtut and said "oh, you may not see much difference with this setting so you might want to leave it as is..."

That's good enough for me !!

Hmm, I notice quite a big difference and improvement to textures with Ani Filtering turned on. YMMV I guess...
