Distribution of megaprims is now "illegal", according to this article. http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/01/02/megaprim-crackdown/Does anyone know if owning and building with them is also against the TOS? I have heard that LL plans to release their own "megaprims", which should support stretching, unlike the current ones, since that funtionality must have been "broken", when Gene Replacement found a way to expand prims beyond the pre-defined dimensions supported by the grid (?)

It's not illegal and that article is more than a year old.
Since H4.6 they function better (bounding box is more accurate).

That's old news.
However ... if you use a megaprim to (i) let it overhang onto someone else's land or (ii) put very large ones near a region boundary, thereby adding to server lag due to communication overhead ... this may constitute an AR'able offence.
Tip: Don't use the >100m ones. The smaller ones are generally safe to use, if you know how to work around the quirks.

Lot of people use them. It's a good idea to make them phantom, for some technical reason I can't recall, and best to only use the smaller megaprims. I've had good luck with using the 20x20 ones for floors and walls, but I make the larger ones phantom when I use them.

In a recent Q&A about Havok4 Andrew Linden was asked about a recent blog posting (I do not know where it was posted) considering megaprims of truly epic proportions ... His reply was (not verbatim) it was something he intended working on as soon as the bugs in Havok4 were attended to ... "megaprim liberation". He went on to say that he had planned on capping them at 256 meters but reconsidered. It wasn't entirely clear if he is thinking larger or smaller but did say that of the places testing out the 256 meter megaprims they were being used responsibly (primarily he mentioned sky effects and them being set to phantom) saying also that it was a high priority that there be "megaprim liberation".
To this I say- woot ...

Using it for building responsibly = Not violation of TOS Wearing it and walking around a sim with it on = Violation of TOS.

he said he uses the 20x20 ones for floors and walls, but makes anything bigger than that phantom. I sit corrected! I'll blame the early morning and the lack of the coffee on that misfire.

I think everyone needs more coffee - it's good for you, and it's Friday. Last I knew, Lindens were removing mega prims on sight if they suspected they were causing a sim problem. Does anyone know if this is still the case?

As far as I know, yes If they are used responsibly and do not affect anyone else then they are usually left alone. If there are issues with the sim and someone has a linden come out to inspect the performance..and the mega prim appears to be the culprit, then they will be removed.

I've been playing around with the mega prims since the havok upgrade and well, frankly, I've not had any problems with the smaller of the Gene Replacement ones. The bounding box works beautifully on them now, holes, cuts and all.
Rule of thumb for any size prim: Responsible use = no ToS violation. Irresponsible use = ToS violation.
Note: I don't normally use any prim over 20x20. Makes the mini-map kinda look funny.

I made a physical spaceship out of 40m spheres. I figured it would crash, and then I'd kick myself for trying something stupid.
So far up to 8 avatars have made multiple sim crossings in one (together) with no noticable lag or crashing.
