I haven't been able to click on a slurl on a website and have it go to SL for a couple of weeks now. I've just been copying the link and pasting it in chat. I've been too lazy to find, or ask for a solution. Hopefully one will get posted here.

I can't get any to work regardless of whether I use Mozilla, which I use all the time, or when I switch to IE.

Some examples are any of the slurs on sarah nerds website sarahnerd.com.

The links at sarahnerd.com don't appear to be what I think is meant by "SLURL".

Those are of the form: secondlife://Liome/3/246/0/

I think SLurl means urls of the form: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eson/32/162/351

The links on sarahnerd.com are working so far as making SL produce a place dialog. A new blank tab is opening up in IE7, which I would say is less than ideal.

sarahnerd.com links are working the same way in firefox 2.0.0.11 and in Opera 9.1.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/BonnyDoon/244/14/617/ works in Opera, Firefox, and IE 7.

It works so far as getting the place dialog to appear in SL.

The map on the browser page may or may not appear.

Yep, none of those work for me either.

What I get is a new page (or tab) opens, a quick flash of the slurl and then the page is blank. Nothing happens in world at all.

I tried pasting in chat but nothing will paste. Do you have to be a premium member for it to work?

No, you shouldn't have to be a premium member. I just right click on the link and choose copy link location then paste it into chat. For some reason you can't right click and have paste as an option in SL. You'll have to either go to Edit > Paste or do Ctrl V. Either of those should work for you.

My slurls have miraculously started working again, btw. I never did figure out what was wrong.

Solution:

You must have IE set as your DEFAULT browser -- if you use Firefox as your default browser, that is what is messing you up. Score one for closed source :)

Eek, don't set IE as your default browser... I fixed this problem for someone before!

Mmmmmmmmmmm

Click Start and select Run

Type 'regedit' and press Enter

Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secondlife

(If it doesn't exist, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, right-click in the view on the right and create a new key named 'secondlife')

Inside 'secondlife', open 'shell'

(If it doesn't exist, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secondlife, right-click in the view on the right and create a new key named 'shell')

Inside 'shell', open 'open'

(If it doesn't exist, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secondlife\shell, right-click in the view on the right and create a new key named 'open')

Inside 'open', open 'command'

(If it doesn't exist, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secondlife\shell\open, right-click in the view on the right and create a new key named 'command')

With 'command' open, look in the view on the right and verify there's one entry. It should point to the Second Life application.

Mine says:

Name: (Default)
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: "C:\Program Files\SecondLifeWindLight\SecondLifeWindLight.exe" -settings settings_windlight.xml -channel "Second Life WindLight" -set SystemLanguage en-us -url "%1"

If you don't have one of these, right-click in the view on the right and create a New 'Expandable String Value.' Name it '(Default)'
Right-click your new entry and choose Modify
If you use Windlight, paste
"C:\Program Files\SecondLifeWindLight\SecondLifeWindLight.exe" -settings settings_windlight.xml -channel "Second Life WindLight" -set SystemLanguage en-us -url "%1"
If you use the current release viewer, paste
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -settings settings.xml -channel "Second Life Release" -set SystemLanguage en-us -url "%1"
Click OK.

Now try!

No way no how. Would never use IE as my default browser. Anyway, it was always working fine with Firefox before, it just stopped working for some reason. When it did stop even IE wouldn't work. Fortunately it's working now and I can enjoy my wonderful Firefox again.

Problem solved.

I didn't have to mess with the registry or do anything else except get off that crap computer.
I loaded SL on my ACER and everything works fine. With 2 gig of ram it's way faster and more responsive with fewer crashes. In fact I don't think it has crashed at all yet. (knocks on wood)
thanks to all who tried to help.
