Was anyone here actually around the area when the whole incident happened? We're making a short film that's partly set in SL around the same time, so we're trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Just to clarify - we're making a short film that is partly set in SL, and it takes place around the same time as the American Apparel griefing/"bombing" - so I was just trying to find out what actually happened at the time i.e. if you were there, what did you see, if anything?

It was covered a bit in the blogs I think. All I really know is from what I read in them - I think it was in New World Notes. Anyways, it seems to be one of those moments that really didn't have an impact within Second Life itself. This didn't stop the outer media from seizing upon it ("in their infinate wisdom" [read: laziness]) as a touchstone moment, totally conflating the actions of a few individuals towards a dubious iconic status. All this just because it was one of the first interactions between brick & mortar companies within Second Life which didn't turn into a gigantic yawnfest and some reporter picked it out of a blog. Now that I reflect on it, I remember reading somewhere it might have been a staged attack to get attention for the company. If (and I admit you might not be and henceforth don't want to tar you with any broad assumptions) you're looking for a comparison of real world businesses integrating into second life, talk to Rissa Maidstone of Dr. Dobbs Island. She & her coworker John Zhaoying are holding their 2nd Life 2.0 summit starting the 15th ( ). They would be more than happy to show you sterile, empty corporate sims and explain why they are empty. They will then show you some home-grown commercial ventures which are thriving, and how the corporate world is learning from them. Well, that's what they did last time, and its part of the focus of their summit. You could also have a good discussion with John Wagner of Information Week who has been steadily writing about Second Life from a corporate perspective all these many months. Another source would be Wagner James who has done likewise with his New World Notes blog for several years. I have to warn you though he's a bit of a flag waver for Second Life/Linden Labs so take his words with a heaping spoonfull of salt. OK, 2 heaping spoonfulls, but he knows people. Or ... you could just pick up the flecks & fragments of information that the outside media randomly siezes ahold of and conflate it into significance, like everyone else has been doing...such as the American Apparel sorta-non-incident.

I fixed it. I'm going to eat some pie now. Dutch apple pie with lite whip cream.
