http://blog.mediamaster.com/2009/01/22/mediamaster-is-shutting-down/

Existing streams are still coming through now, but no clue how long it will stay that way. As far as I can tell, their suggested replacements (LaLa and mp3tunes) don't have the URL feature that lets you run an entire playlist on your land in SL.

Fabulous while it lasted...I've been scouring the forums for other options, thought the other MediaMaster users might need a heads up that they should start shopping around too.

Aww, a shame. I've used it to provide a unique mix of music in my Bay City store, and will miss it.

It was so easy! All my properties use them...I'm hoping it will take them a while to get around to shutting down the URLs, it'll sure take me some time to replace them.

Thanks for the heads up, Victoria. We have several playlists on MediaMaster - very sad news! If anyone hears of a service like it, I'd love to hear about it. I'd been checking out music that I see others using inworld, but they have so far all been DJ streams served from users' own computers, or Shoutcast-llke streams.

Wah!

Possible mediamaster replacements
01-26-2009 09:51
This article has a larger list of services to check out:

http://venturebeat.com/2008/01/23/38-freecheap-music-sites-welcome-to-the-fray-qbox/

Read carefully - many of these services don't do what mediamaster did - but it looks to me like some of them are worth checking out.

I'm tied up with family issues for the next few days, so would appreciate it if folks posted what they find out ...

Hmm...today I get the "MEDIAMASTER!" intro but the tunes never start. Guess I won't knock myself out trying to sort out what the problem is.

So far no luck finding anything that'll provide URL access to a stored personal playlist, even for a fee. Legally problematic maybe...still looking though!

Awwww....this is sad. I've been using MediaMaster to stream my 536 favorite all time tunes on my property. It was such a great service! I haven't been able to log in and check if it's still streaming or not, but it's probably gone. Sad. Sad. Sad. I'll try to check out a few of the alternatives and see if anything comes up as closely viable. But I have my doubts...

It was still working as of last night. Haven't found any good alternatives yet.

What DJs do is use Shoutcast, which involves feeding the shoutcast stream from your own computer (usually using a winamp playlist). The amount of bandwidth that takes is under your control, but a good quality radio stream runs at 128kbps, actually consuming about 135 with headers and associated data. Some streams run as low as 40-something kbps. And, of course, the music is only present while your computer is up feeding the stream, bleah.

SL itself should be given 350kbps in order to have any sort of decent frame rate - I tend to give it 700.

I found it yesterday and it is perfect for me. It seams that it is still working, but oh my... the MediaMaster blog say they will shout it down. :(

I found an inworld stream renter that could replace Media Master! I pass the info on to anyone else whose land is feeling a bit empty without a MM playlist.

XstreamWorks has an integrated hosting space that you can use to keep a running playlist without leaving your own machine streaming 24/7. Unlike MM if you want to DJ/hire a DJ for an event you can just hijack the playlist stream for that time and it'll go right back to the playlist afterwards without switching URLs around. Got some other cool features too, I recommend checking it out if you haven't found another way to replace your tunes yet.

Rates seem reasonable to me, and the guy was super patient even though I was flailing around in Windows (unnecessarily, the Mac would have worked fine.)

Anyway. I can't get the SLURL because SL won't let me in today, but worth a search if you're still...um...searching.

FWIW, XstreamWorks are located at secondlife://Byron%20Bay/35/43/901

The location is a bit hard to get into because the sim is extremely lagged down.

Payment is in L$, so it'll be VAT free for EU residents. That's good.

I'm not a customer, but the outfit seems worth checking out.

We use a site called ShoutcastStreaming.us, using their AutoDJ capability. Seems to work fine; the streams never go down. Upload music using a generic FTP client, fees are reasonable (they vary according to bitrate; 96k actually sounds fine; 80K isn't bad either, surprisingly.) Icecast also available.

Ooh that one looks really good too! Thanks for the link!

I'm ridiculously excited to have my tunes back (obviously).
