I got a SL account a year ago . I had to take it off my pc because i didn't have enough memory space for it. It kept freezzing and running slow. Is there a better way to put it on my computer with out taking up a lot of space?

The only way to create your avatar is to do it in the game. There was a book put out, but it is pretty much outdated now. The best way to learn is to ask yur questions here, also try searching the forums using keywords. _____________________

First of all - try to get into SL - anything else is just costly, but has no effects.
And once you got there take your time to learn and get used to SL, and probably go to NCI to find good help and education concerning Secondlife. The book is basically just something to read because of the fast changing nature of SL - so you sometimes get some historical information. We can also provide you with basic information inworld to give you a hand for the first days - just let us know when you are there. Wolwaner Jervil, SL Guided Tours |

I used to hook up to an old laptop occasionally at one time. It could only handle SL in non-busy places. If you manage to get yourself to one of the sandboxes you can make yourself a sky platcform at, say, 3000 metres altitude, and do stuff up there with much less lag. Be sure to save anything you build yo your inventory, though, as the sandboxes are cleared every few hours.

What's your operating system and specs? Adding memory isn't a big deal any more so really if you want to be able to go into SL and enjoy the expereince, you're going to need the memory. No other way around it. As for your avatar, you have to change your appearance while you're logged in. Everything that can be done with-in SL involves actually being 'in'. It's a fantastic and fascinating exploration. If you do make it in, IM me and I'll be happy to help you out with the basics. I'm on usually at night EST.

This is a useful tool, just go to the page, select SecondLife from the games list, and it will tell you how your PC meets/doesn't meet the specs.
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest As Milla said, you must be in world to change your avatar's appearance. |

One of my computers doesn't meet the specs, but I still enjoy Second Life on it. It just takes multiple crashes and log-ins for each session. You don't get charged extra for crashes. Also staying out of laggy areas or areas with a lot of scripts helps prolong your sessions. I have even built on my margincal connectin.

Hello,
One thing that might make your SL more functional is to change your graphics settings. Open up SL, go to Edit at the top of your screen and click Preferences. In Preferences go to the Graphics Tab and move your Quality and Performance slider to Low or Mid. This will make your graphics not quite as pretty but should speed up SL for you quite a bit. Also, I'm sending you a landmark inworld of some places you can get decent freebies to customize your avatar. ~Desi |

Is there a book Second Life for dummies out there somewhere because I need it? lol ![]() There is a very good one, called "Second Life: The Official Guide, 2nd Edition". It just came out this past January and is great for covering lots of stuff you'd have to find out by trial and error otherwise. _____________________

Another thing I would suggest is to go to Help Island (not sure if there is one or multiples of these). There are generally volunterr mentors (they will be wearing a "Mentor" tag) who are there to answer questions and get you started in SL.
Trout Recreant (one of our forum regular is such a mentor) so you may wish to contact him directly. (Trout if you want me to quit doing this...just let me know I consider you one of the best, most level-headed and helpful-to-new-resident people who is also a Mentor.)_____________________

Oh, but to find out by trial and error is a part of the fun with SL, isn't it?

Help Island Public

There is a public accessible Help Island - Help Island Public where you can find Mentors around. You are not allowed to return to the initial Help Islands once you left them (unless you become a Second Life Mentor).

Just dive into SL and start to say Hello to people. What you do is check out their profile first as you will see those who are willing to lend a helping hand to others will put it in their profile. You will learn so much more but just clicking away and asking even if you think the question is dumb it don't matter we've all asked the same questions.
Good Luck in SL it can be a wonderful place. |

At the very top of your screen it tells you where you are. You can also open the Map.

Your forum custom title says "Girl Gamer".
What kind of games are you playing on your computer? What kind of internet service do you have? Are you on a wired or wireless network? Can you do Help / About Second Life and then highlight the part of the dialog that describes your computer system, press Control C to copy it, and then paste it into the post editor here so we can see your system specs? Of course if you know a better way to get your system specs that would be find too. _____________________

Thanks, Czari; that made my day. I like helping new people. I can't help older people because they all know more than me and they ask difficult questions ![]() Lindal Kidd is also a very active mentor and is wonderfully patient. I've spent some time on Help Islands with her watching her, and she's very, very good with new people. She's also pretty hot, so it's delightful to watch people rez as brand new newbies and within five minutes demand sexxies from her. Nothing funnier than that. Any new resident who wants to is welcome to IM me in-world or PM me here and I'll do my best to help out. I remember what it was like being new. Just pure frustration. I wouldn't have stuck with it if I hadn't found these forums and if people here hadn't mentored me, so giving a little back is the least I can do. _____________________
