I took a small break from SL, probably about 2 weeks so I could keep my sanity and get away from the buggy mess that it's become. I came back and started working on my clothing again and today I uploaded a mess of new outfits i've just made as well as some building textures with transparencies. I used PNG format as usual only when I went to use them, it had pulled in the checker mark background from the graphics client that was supposed to indicate it was transparent.
Is it just another bug or did LL decide to stop supporting PNG files all of a sudden? I went to the known issues list and found nothing, did a search of all forum threads for everything I could think of that could cover a PNG issue and nada.. not one mention so is it me or what?
Anyone else notice this? I just spent a buttload of lindens on uploads and they are all trash now.

Are you saying that when applied the transparent areas showed as the alpha-checkerboard pattern?
What version and version number of SL viewer?
I suppose it might be prudent to check at least a few of the textures one imports inworld to verify things are working right before spending too much.
If needed you can test things out on the beta grid, although something like the problem you describe might have different results on main grid with main grid client and beta grid with beta grid client.

Thats exactly what i'm saying. The image is transparent.. (you can tell when you overlap it with another transparency) but the actual part of the graphic that should be clear.. has the checkerboard pattern on it instead. So even though its acting like its transparent.. its not and it looks really retarded I'd be more than happy to TP anyone who wants to see this for themselves. I'm currently running Second life release 1.19.0 (5)

I think that's the current regular viewer, the one that is supposed to work.
Have you tried opening the files back up in a few paint programs, the one you made them with, MS paint, etc.?

oh and as for checking them.. they all come in looking fine.. its only when you apply them to an actual prim or clothing that they show the checker board so until I actually went to make something with them, I wouldn't know there was an issue. I tend to upload in batches then make the items because it saves time and helps me keep textures organized so yeah it might have been more prudent to check each texture as I uploaded it but it still wouldn't have kept me from getting screwed out of the lindens My question still stands.. has SL stopped supporting PNG files or is this a new bug or is it just me having this issue?

ok here is what I just tried, now i'm even more confused lmao:
I opened the original file in the following programs : Firworks CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3, Gimp 2.0. All programs show it as a transparency with no issues. Photoshop showed the alpha channels exactly as I saved them.
I took one of the files I pulled into SL that was borked and saved it back to my hard drive.. I opened it up (its in TGA format as normal) No transparency. It saved it with a black background instead of saving it transparent or even with the messed up checker board background.
The viewer i'm using is the one that is supposed to have no major issues. I'd hate to see what would happen if I downloaded the optional one.

oy, more info:
I just took a transparent file that I didn't see the checker board background on, saved it out of SL as a .tga and it also has no transparency. I took the original PGN file and converted it into a TGA file and uploaded it.. applied it to a prim and it's still messed up. Only now its showing black instead of checker board.

Have you had anyone else look at it yet?
It couldn't hurt to clear your cache, and it's just barely possible that turning off your computer so you video card has no power to it might fix some odd problem it's having.
I don't think there's any real chance that LL has stopped supporting PNG.
There's always a chance of a bug.

Mine was made with either paint.net or GIMP.
I have noticed that Gimp will sometimes mess up transparencies on me, I usually double check them in paint.net before uploading them. However, they won't show up with the checkers in the upload window if they're messed up.

I went and looked and Tempest's description of the checkerboard is exactly right.
I would think that the checkerboard effect is produced in the SL client.
I'm using the same version of SL as Tempest.
She has a x850, I have an x800 .

Tempest, try downloading a different texture you already have in your inventory, reupload it back to SL and see if it's messed up.

She's done more than one.
I saw two, one where are basically clear part of the window resulted in a pure checkerboard, and the other where a partially clear window - might have been sheer curtains - had a fainter checkerboard superimposed on the pattern.
