Ok, what the heck...i have been trying to take pictures for the last two days. I download them to my computer. And when I go to save them the only file extention it gives me is a j2c. What the heckies is that??? Does anyone know how to fix it?? And yes, i filed a support ticket, if it will even help.

.j2c is jpeg 2000 which is how SL automatically compresses everything uploaded to it...

It's JPEG 2000, a newfangled picture format. There are some converters out there where you can convert the pictures into less exotic formats. When I take pictures to disk, I usually store them as BMP. These are atrociously huge, but lossless and can be modified by any program.

Yes. You must have ticked this at some point. Without it, it saves things as BMP.

Hey, I didn't know this and I've been around awhile. Fortunately for me, I don't use the compress to hard drive, which is why I DIDN'T know this. I'm very glad you asked this question, myself.

http://irfanview.com/ has a nice free graphics utility that should be able to convert j2c files into the format of your choice, among many other useful things.

OR...simply press the PRINT SCREEN key on your keyboard, and paste the captured image into any program that accepts graphical images, then crop and adjust the image to suite you before saving it. This works well with any PC. even if you only have Word, Works, or Paint...Not sure about MAC. any Mac users out there with the answer?

Paint pro and Photoshop can handle that format. Do not recall if basic paint can handle that. I have the feeling that it can't, which is why I actually opened up Photoshop the other day :)

Oh, and to save pictures to your hard-drive that you have saved to SL? Open the picture. Click on "Save picture as texture" or something like that in the menu (I need to get in world to find that again). It will save your picture saved in Sl to your hard-drive, but will save it as a .tga. Unfortunately. .tga can be opened in Photoshop and probably Paint Pro.

Command, Shift & 3 creates a screenshot to desktop.
Command, Shift & 4 brings up a cursor so you can select the area you want to save.

Also on a PC you can use Ctrl>Tilde (~) ,,, this also puts the snapshot on your hard drive in a .bmp format.

Why is it that my pictures uploads as textures? Everyone else shows as snap shots? Is there a difference?

Uploads? Do you mean the pictures that you save to your computer and then upload to SL? Those come into SL as textures. Do you mean it is saving as textures in SL? It isn't supposed to, I don't think, but mine have been saving recently as textures. I might have clicked something or other. Or not. Seems random. Some save as textures some save as snaps, both saving inside SL.

Yep, if I take a pic and then upload it to SL its icon appears as a texture instead of a snapshot. It’s just a bit of annoyance really, when I want to quickly delete extra textures out of my inventory and I accidentally delete a photo as well.

Oh, in that case I am fairly certain that it is supposed to upload as texture. It takes time and energy, but create a subfolder for your textures/pictures so that you do not accidently delete them :)

You do get better resolution when you download and then upload, and you have extra security that you have the picture in more than one place so that when SL randomly decides to delete your inventory, you still have it on your computer, and when your computer dies you . . . um . .. Really eats up the money, though. :) Slow deadly money eater, so "cheap" that you do not realize that you just spent 1000L.
