LL made a HUGE blog post about the quicktime bug, even going so far as to make everyone re-agree to the TOS to get the word out about it, and now that there is a fix they are compeltely silent.
Hello? Any linden reading this, AT LEAST put up a blog post about it!
You did the right thing with the warning up front, please follow up by informing that there is an update on Apple's website. The "auto-update" did NOT inform me that there was an update, I only found out by reading news, so who knows how many other people won't automatically be told, or be told that this is a " highly recommended" update (Apples wording) instead of "critical" like they should have labeled it and decide to not bother?

The plan was to force a mandatory viewer update once Apple released a fix. That new viewer supposidly will not allow QuickTime to be used (within SL) unless it was the proper version.
If Apple only just released the fix they would need some time to test things before they push out a mandatory viewer. If making it mandatory means that the current WindLight and RC will stop working as well that's likely to take some time since they would need to release three new viewers at once (and for PC, Mac and Linux which makes 9 of them I guess).

Agreed, Farallon. There should be a blog post to tell people about the fix.
However, the patch only came out on Thursday, and it is the weekend. I haven't even seen any news organizations report it yet. Give it a little time.
Getting the word out about the security hole was a matter of immediate public safety, so it was extremely urgent. Informing people about the fix is simply a convenience. If somebody uninstalled QT (or just turned it off) because of the last announcement, they were kept out of harm's way. If they now don't have QT for a few extra days because they don't yet know about the patch, they're still out of danger. They just might miss a movie or two is all. Let's try to keep it in perspective.
It's not like Apple themselves even made an announcement, as far as I know, just an obscure entry on the docs section of their site. Apple never talks loudly about bug fixes because then they'd have to acknowledge they have bugs like everyone else. They'd have to stop pretending "it just works", and somehow that just wouldn't jive with their universe. But I digress.
Anyway, beyond just an announcement on LL's blog, it would hope they'd release a client update in the coming days that would prevent SL from using any older versions of Quicktime. Force people to upgrade for their own good.
