I am new to SL and I had bought a skin, however, it is in my object category in my inventory and when I right click and wear it just is a big board of what I had bought. Can someone please help this newbie?

You need to pull it out of inventory onto the ground - aka 'rezzing' - then right-click and choose Open. It'll give you the option to either copy to inventory or copy and wear. Choose one and then pick up (right-click > Take) or delete (right-click > More > Delete) the box. Not all areas will allow you to rez the box, so you may want to use the search function to find a sandbox.
